The day ‘they’ sold out Sarawak (UPDATED with Chinese Translation)

Posted: 20 May 2013 04:26 PM PDT

The Chinese who kept Taib in power were rewarded for their support and all the transgressions, abuse of power and corruption that is being perpetuated by Taib and his family, and which you are complaining about, is being perpetuated in collaboration with his Chinese cronies.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Many people are calling the Sarawakians stupid and are disparaging the natives of Sarawak for keeping what they say is the most corrupt Chief Minister of that state in power for so long. Taib, who took office in March 1981, has been in power for more than 32 years now.

I take it these people saying all this must be quite young (meaning below 30-35) and do not know much about Malaysia's history. If they did, they would know what really happened in the past and why things are what they are today -- and hence would be very ashamed and would not talk so much.

Actually, the attempt to kick out Taib Mahmud was launched 26 years ago in 1987 by none other than his own uncle together with Dayak leader, Leo Moggie anak Irok, the one-time President of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), a breakaway party from Parti Kebangsaan Sarawak (SNAP).

That attempt, however, failed mainly because the Chinese supported Taib and not the natives. Thereafter, Taib launched his divide-and-rule counter-strategy and stayed in power for another 26 years until today (and will probably 'rule' Sarawak for more than 35 years before we see his exit).

The Chinese who kept Taib in power were rewarded for their support and all the transgressions, abuse of power and corruption that is being perpetuated by Taib and his family, and which you are complaining about, is being perpetuated in collaboration with his Chinese cronies.

Malaysia Today, in fact, wrote about the logging and timber scam in Sarawak back in 2004 and we even named names. Nevertheless, nine years on and the situation has more or less remained the same and will probably remain unchanged right up to the coming Sarawak state election in three years time.

Excerpts from Chapter 6: The Ming Court Affair

The Broken Shield

The Ming Court is a hotel in Kuala Lumpur where a group of politicians headed by the former Governor of Sarawak, Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, gathered some time in March 1987 and discussed a plan to topple the state government of Sarawak under the leadership of Taib Mahmud, Rahman's nephew. The Ming Court Hotel became the 'headquarters' of these politicians who were dissatisfied with Taib's government. Thus, the name of Ming Court Hotel Affair came about.

Dissatisfaction with Taib's leadership started as early as in 1985, when Bumiputera politicians accused him of neglecting the interests of Bumiputeras -- the Malays, Ibans and Bidayuhs -- and giving so much face to the Chinese. Many big projects, timber concession areas and large tracts of land were given to the Chinese and SUPP. Because of a special relationship between Taib and the SUPP leaders, SUPP became very daring in its demand. SUPP even asked the state government to give it a piece of land in each of the seven divisions in the state for the construction of its premises. This request by SUPP angered the Bumiputeras.

Wilfred Nissom, the independent State Assemblyman for Bengoh, was among those who were critical of Taib Mahmud. Nissom accused Taib of being a 'weak' Chief Minister who always gave in to demands by SUPP. He said that it was only a weak Chief Minister who tried to make a criminal out of a Bidayuh who had made a private application to join PBB under him.

What more can SUPP ask?

Joseph Tawie, Free Malaysia Today, 14 August 2010

Former councillor of Parti Rakyat Sarawak Joseph Allen has slammed SUPP leaders for neglecting the interests of Bumiputeras in their constituencies.

"Look at longhouses and villages under their constituencies in Pelawan, Bawang Assan and Dudong in Sibu, Sarikei and Bintangor: many of them have no clean water, electricity and proper roads compared with Chinese areas under their control," Allen said.

"Clearly the interests of Bumiputeras have been neglected," he said, adding that SUPP (Sarawak United People's Party) paid only 'lip service' to the Bumiputeras.

Allen was commenting on the proposed meeting between SUPP leaders and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

The SUPP leaders want Najib to exert pressure on Chief Minister Taib Mahmud to give equal opportunities to the Chinese community in business, contracts, employment in the civil service, scholarships and places in institutions of higher education if the Barisan Nasional leaders want to see the party doing well in the coming election.

"I am surprised to hear that SUPP is asking for equal opportunities business, tenders and government contractors. After the Ming Court affair in 1987, SUPP was given everything," he said.

(The Ming Court affair refers to group of rebel state ministers and assistant ministers who plotted to topple Taib by moving a vote of no confidence in the state legislative assembly. The plotters met at the Ming Court (now Corus Hotel) in 1987 to hatch their plan but Taib retaliated by the dissolving the state assembly. He won in the fresh polls.)

"Who owns Class A and Class B licences? And who are being awarded big projects, given timber concessions and given provisional leases to plant oil palm in native customary rights land? Who are the millionaires and billionaires in the state?" Allen asked.

Allen, who is a contractor himself, alleged that Bumiputeras, who own class F licences, can only get government projects if they promise to sub-contract such projects to Chinese contractors, because the majority of the Bumiputera contractors do not have capital.

"This arrangement is being done in Sarikei, Bintangor, Sibu, and I am sure in other towns often with the full knowledge of certain authorities," said Allen, who is being dubbed the 'Ibrahim Ali' of the Dayak community.

Said Allen: "What SUPP leaders are seeking are projects for their cronies. The fight now is between their (SUPP) cronies and cronies of Taib. They are meeting and asking the prime minister to pressure Taib to give them some of the projects."

"They are not doing it for the ordinary Chinese," he added.

How would you describe the politics in East Malaysia, specifically in Sarawak, compared to the days when you were a politician?

The Star, 18 December 2010

Even in Sarawak, the public is more cynical now, compared to say, ten years ago. More so among the urban population with access to all sorts of information or misinformation. So, politicians are subject to greater scrutiny, which is a good thing.

Rural Sarawakians by and large are still respectful of authority. They are uncomfortable with the aggressive confrontational style of campaigning seen in Semenanjung. They still need basic infrastructure. They need potable water supply, electricity, access to roads, access to good education while trying to make a living on smallholdings and family farms. For instance, our area, including my own longhouse, is accessible by road. We are just an hour from Sibu Airport. But our lighting comes from our own small diesel gen-set. It is difficult for people in the Semenanjung to comprehend that. Until these basic needs are met, the dynamics of politics in Sarawak will remain unchanged. -- Tan Sri Leo Moggie

Raja Petra Kamarudin

The Broken Shield

Joseph Tawie, Free Malaysia Today, 14-08-2010

The Star, 18-12-2010

Leo Moggie

Don't knock the Bangladeshis

Posted: 21 May 2013 12:42 PM PDT

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/pengundi-bangla.jpg

We hear stories of crimes committed by foreign workers. The Bangladeshis formed the 2nd largest contingent of foreign workers at one time but their numbers involved in crime were disproportionately lower than the biggest group - no ice creams for guessing correctly.

Ice Cream Seller

We have been hearing far too many negative stories about the Bangladeshis in the run up to and post GE13. Many Malaysians have freely vented their feelings and I can't help but notice the enormous amount of ignorance being demonstrated in the process.

How many actually know that their country was formerly East Pakistan? How many know that it has a secular constitution? Do you know that the nationals are called BANGLADESHIS (as opposed to what has become a derogatory term here - BANGLA) Do you know that they are 98% Bengalis? (Our dumb history books teach our kids that Bengalis are the people with turbans -  referring instead to the Sikhs who are Punjabis.) Do they know that their (Bangladeshi) language is Bengali - probably centuries older than our BM and with a script of their own? Do our history books teach and our bigots know that Punjabis have various faiths - mainly Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims (as amongst Pakistani Punjabis)?

We have many foreign workers here - and I have seen them all on the payroll. Indonesians, Nepalese, Vietnamese, Thais, Indians, Bangladeshis, Burmese, Pakistanis. We hear stories of crimes committed by foreign workers. The Bangladeshis formed the 2nd largest contingent of foreign workers at one time but their numbers involved in crime were disproportionately lower than the biggest group - no ice creams for guessing correctly.

Many employers will tell you that they got their money's worth employing Bangladeshi workers compared to many others (for the relevant sectors).

In my humble operation in Australia, I had the good fortune to employ 2 of them - a young couple. Rima approached me out of the blue when I was idling in a mall and asked for a job. She had just arrived with her husband who was doing his Master in Engineering at a leading university. I had no vacancies at the time. She  still came regularly. Almost 3 times a week. On one of her later visits , she brought her husband, Atif - the 2 would not have looked out of place in Bollywood.

Rima herself was a graduate in Electrical Engineering - like her husband. When there eventually was an opening, I took in Atif instead. The vacancy suited a male better but eventually, I was able to hire them both. They worked well with the other staff - Aussies, Koreans, Japanese, Singaporeans, Indonesians, French and a few others.

During the fasting month, he continued as usual. I remember an incident once when he said he could not taste the ice cream while it was being made because of Ramadan. I related to him an incident in the past where I had an Indonesian Production Manager who said that it was alright to taste it as that was part of the job - he would just rinse his mouth after that. He said he was not consuming it for pleasure (half a teaspoonful). Atif thought about it, and thereafter did exactly that.

They were like children of my own to me. He would come in at 7am in the dead of winter on some days and run off at 9am - to catch the bus for lectures. Whenever I was out of town, they collected the cash and banked in every cent. When I gave them money for taxis (on days when they worked nights), they would take the bus and return the money - without deducting bus fare. I gave them both my credit card to use when they went to buy supplies for me.

Some customers thought that we were family - true in a sense. She sent food for me once in a while. We shared meals often at work. They were both popular with customers - she for her warmth and he for his neatness and efficiency. When my late brother was hospitalised, they went frequently to visit him - despite having to prepare for exams and juggling work shifts.

What also set them apart in comparison to many of our own spoilt kids was that THEY NEEDN'T HAVE DONE IT. Rima's father was a professor in a university back home. Atif's father was one of the most senior officers in the air force - post retirement, he was still provided with a driver and bodyguard. They could have just relaxed on their parents' provisions but chose not to.

When Atif graduated with his Masters degree, he brought the certificate to the workplace after convocation and had a photograph taken with me. On their return from Australia, they stopped in KL - and we had the opportunity to bring them home and go sightseeing.

Rima refers to me as her Malaysian father and I call her my Bengali daughter. I am sometimes father and sometimes father-in-law to Atif - depending on the situation!

So, the issue before us is that we not paint them all with the same broad brush. I can relate very similar situations with the various other nationalities I have had the good fortune to have interacted with over the last 30 years.

The fact that foreigners were used by unscrupulous politicians during GE13 should not be their cross to bear in isolation. Instead of going after them alone, we should go after the hidden hands behind all these shenanigans - even if the trails lead to Kerala.

One educatiom system

Posted: 21 May 2013 11:52 AM PDT

Don't choose to be blind over abolishing vernacular schools.

Navin Karan

Having a one education system is a good platform to cultivate real multiracialism for kids from the beginning and not during the teenage years (13) where commonly they prefer to mix among their own community. It is worse when they have to enrol into remove class (Peralihan - a discrimination for kids who couldn't master Bahasa Malaysia after 6 years).

PR, don't be opportunists by slamming the govt as being racist or that this is a kind of punishment to the voters, please. We Malaysians have been agreeable with PR for most of their govt agendas but don't assume we are always 'YES BOSS'. Actually, PR should encourage us and also work together with the govt, especially on how to make an effective "Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK)" since the BN govt seems to be always dry on brilliant ideas.

And MIC, to win the Indians' heart doesn't mean you have to be Vijayakanth to going against it to fight for Tamil schools. Right now MIC says they are fighting for Indian rights but in actual fact they are drama kings!! You, MIC/ MCA/Gerakan/PPP/IPF/AMMA/TAM/KIMMA should propose to instate vernacular language in SK syllabus and to have it made a compulsory subject under the mother tongue category. Non-Indian and non-Chinese students should be given a choice to choose a preferred language. No excuse should be tolerated when the student or parents refuse or make the process difficult.

Ultimately, the govt is to ensure Bahasa Malaysia dikuasai oleh semua kaum as well as proficiently mastering English since the world made this language a good communication platform and it is the govt's duty to protect mother tongue languages.

Most parents or scholars prefer the upcoming generation to master certain languages according to demand. This is not a wrong perception but 'taraf apa' to know your own mother tongue. The mindset should be tuned; learning a language isn't to help the economy but you risk losing one's identity. They will fail to know the history of their own ancestors, the culture, the morale, the scriptures about god; all these are mostly available in their own mother tongue language. Yes, no doubt all these are available in English but how original can it be? Can you get 100% chicken curry taste in vegetarian chicken curry?

Primary school is the first 'parent' for the children and if under the same roof is shared by the same ethnicity, the bonding with just one particular ethnic group would become too strong. Thereafter in secondary school, half of the teenagers find difficulty in breaking the wall to mix around. The gap worsens when insensitive words are used 'Cina apa lagi mau', 'pariah', 'belacan' (examples only, don't attack me pls!). Now look at 2 scenarios: when kids use such wrong words, the parents'/teachers' involvement is a must to correct the KIDS. We may successfully correct them with a probability of 9/10; in the same scenario, if a secondary school student uses offensive words, when the parents/teachers try to correct them, they will come up with a lot of excuses ('dia mula dulu cikgu', 'dia yang kutuk kaum kerabat kita abah', 'depa satu geng challenge kita orang'), the probability to change is 5/10. The best way to educate the pupil about unity starts in primary schools, at a tender age without knowing their background.

I am a father of two, who is torn between wanting his children to learn their heritage but wary that sending them to a Tamil school will not give them a smooth journey from child to teenage years. I want to look forward to seeing them celebrate Raya by bersalam-salaman for maaf, zahir & batin, CNY by performing the lion dance, Deepavali with lighting the lamp around the SK schools. I wish SK will be ready with vernacular as compulsory and protected. The mindset of children to accept 1Malaysia is more open at a tender age as compared to the teenage period.

So let's work for it, my fellow politicians.

DPM: Dong Zong must meet govt requirements for UEC

Posted: 21 May 2013 03:43 AM PDT

Azril Annuar, fz.com

The United Chinese School Committees' Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) must "meet the demands and requirements" of the Education Ministry in order for the United Examination Certificate (UEC) to be recognised.

Education Minister I Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government's stance on the matter is clear and it will maintain this stance, adding that any changes will have to come from Dong Zong itself.

"We have discussed the issue and the government's stance on this matter is clear. If there are any changes it must come from the other party and it must synchronise with our education policies," he told a news conference.

Muhyiddin, who is also the deputy prime minister, earlier attended a briefing with the top officers of the former Higher Education Ministry which has been merged with the Education Ministry in the new cabinet announced last week.

The Higher Education Ministry and the Education Ministry was split into two ministries during former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi's tenure in 2004.

Assisting Muhyiddin in the newly merged ministry are Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh as Education Minister II, and P Kamalanathan and Datuk Mary Yap as deputy education ministers.

When asked whether the two ministries will have separate secretary-generals, director generals and others, Muhyiddin said he has discussed the issue with the Chief Secretary Datuk Seri Ali Hamsa and the Public Service Department (PSD) director-general  Datuk Mohamad Zabidi Zainal.

"We might just call the two ministries the Education Ministry from now on. As for the secretary-generals and the director-generals, the PSD will get back to me by next week. Once they have informed me I will talk to the prime minister about this for his approval.

"What we will do on the merger of the two ministries is that we will streamline it as needed. The same goes with the National Education Blueprint and the Higher Education Plan, if it needs streamlining or upgrade works, we will cross the bridge once we get there," said Muhyiddin.

When asked whether the merger might cause problems, he said it was not an issue as both ministries already have their own plans in motion, and he will continue on track with what was planned and only streamline the plans when needed.

Police quiz FMT journalists

Posted: 21 May 2013 03:39 AM PDT

FMT journalists were quizzed over articles quoting Haris Ibrahim with regard to his proposal to hold a rally to topple the ruling government.

(FMT) - Two FMT journalists yesterday gave statements to the police with regard to their news reports on Haris Ibrahim's vow to topple the government through a massive street rally.

FMT journalists Lisa J Ariffin and Alyaa Azhar were called to give their respective statements to the police under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code, with respect to the police officer's power to require attendance of witnesses.

Both journalists gave their statements to ASP Ananthan Rajoo from the Dang Wangi district police station.

However, it is not clear if Haris will be investigated for suspected offences under the Sedition Act or under the Penal Code as student activist Adam Adli Halim, who also made the same call on a May 13 forum to topple Barisan Nasional through street rallies.

When asked on the arrest of Adam, Ananthan said the police had been monitoring the latter's movements prior to the forum.

"He had been calling for a massive street rally even before May 13," he explained.

On May 13, speakers at the forum had unanimously agreed that waiting for five years until the next general election was too long, and vowed to overthrow BN this year through force.

"We will take to the streets and take over Putrajaya. If we really want to overthrow them, there is no other way. Democracy does not work," Anything But Umno (ABU) spokesperson Haris was quoted as saying.

"The people cannot wait anymore. We don't want to wait another five years. We will take the streets," he added.

He had also insisted the street government would go on with or without opposition Pakatan Rakyat's support.

NGOs seek justice over political aide’s murder

K Vasantha Kumar, who contested in Tapah, wants answers over the murder of his aide K Murugan.

Priscilla Prasena, FMT

A group of NGOs have urged the police to expedite investigations into the murder of political aide K Murugan's during the 13th general election.

Led by PKR's candidate for the Tapah parliament seat, K Vasantha Kumar, the group handed over a memorandum addressed to Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.

Murugan, who was Vasantha Kumar's aide, went missing on May 1. His remains were later discovered on May 5 in a pond in Bemban Industrial Park, Batu Gajah.

"His hands and legs were tied with wires and the post mortem revealed that Murugan had died of blunt force trauma to the head," Vasantha Kumar told reporters.

"We believe that the murder was politically motivated as he was threatened by the supporters of MIC candidate M Saravanan," he added.

Vasantha Kumar was accompanied by Murugan's family lawyer M. Visvanathan and several other NGOs.

The memorandum demanded that the IGP form a special task force to investigate all political parties involved in the election campaign without fear and favour and to investigate the records in Murugan's mobile phone.

According to Vasantha Kumar, Murugan was very helpful in organizing the election campaign in the rural and interior areas in Tapah.

Murugan had informed Vasantha Kumar that he had been receiving threatening calls from unknown persons, who warned him to stop campaigning or he would be killed.

"On May 1, Murugan arranged a 'ceramah' at his residential area in Bidor. After the talk, he was cleaning up the venue with his friends when he received a phone call. He left the venue and never returned.

"Murugan's sister lodged a report with the Bidor police station when he failed to return home and was not reachable," Vasantha Kumar explained.

Former NUJ chairman heckled and booed

Posted: 20 May 2013 04:52 PM PDT

(The Sun Daily) - Former NUJ chairman Hata Wahari was heckled and booed by his former colleagues at Malay-daily Utusan Malaysia during his annual 'protest' at their office yesterday.

Some 50 Utusan Malaysia staff gathered at building's entrance at about 5pm in anticipation of a 'demonstration' led by Hata, who instead showed up alone with a message for his former employer - on a large black banner with bold white type.

"Kepada Ketua Pengarang Utusan: Hentikan kewartawanan tidak bertanggungjawab. Jadilah wartawan yang menjunjung etika kewartawanan. Jangan gadaikan masa depan Utusan untuk kepentingan diri. Jangan jadi wartawan rasis. (To the Utusan Editor in Chief: Stop irresponsible journalism. Be an ethical journalist. Do not gamble the future of Utusan for personal gains. Do not be a racist journalist.)

Several police trucks and patrol cars were also seen parked around the premise as Utusan Malaysia had previously reported that Malay right-wing NGO Pekida would be sending its members to "defend" the paper against Hata and his supporters.

Hata, who stood across the road from the office for about 10 minutes, was met by jeers and taunts by the staff - "Barua!" (goon) "Kau sakit!" (You are sick!) "Balik!" (Go home!).

A man also dashed across the road and kicked his banner, while another threw a packet of fried noodles which splattered on the road.

When met earlier, Hata expressed surprise at the 'attention' he received, stating that it was a "personal protest" which he has been doing since 2011, on May 2, to mark his sacking from the paper.

Hata, who served the company for 16 years, was subjected to an internal inquiry before being sacked for issuing statements which allegedly goes against the company's policies.

"May 2 is also my birthday and World Press Freedom Day. But this year, due to the general elections, I decided to come here on May 20.

"I did not want to involve anybody else because of possible repercussions. If any action was to be taken (by Utusan), I would be the only one affected," said Hata.

He added, Utusan Malaysia is expected to move out of its present premise by this year, and thus it is significant for him to persist in his call for them to 'change'.

"I will continue protesting every year until there is a change in the paper's direction towards upholding principles of ethical journalism," he said, in stressing that the paper's predecessor, Utusan Melayu, was a vocal critique of the government led by the nation's founding father Tunku Abdul Rahman.

The Star, 18-12-2010

Leo Moggie

Racism has reached ‘dark and sinister’ levels

Posted: 20 May 2013 03:06 PM PDT

The call to boycott Chinese businesses and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's silence show continued desperation and fear among the BN leaders, says Sabah STAR.

Raymond Tombung, FMT

KOTA KINABALU: Calls by Malay-Muslim groups to boycott Chinese businesses is bad enough without Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's arrogant retort for the 51% voters who voted for the opposition to leave the country if they are unhappy, said Bingkor assemblyman Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

Compounding this 'dangerous levels' of racism is Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's silence, he added.

"The Prime Minister needs to speak up against these calls, lest the BN (Barisan Nasional) and Umno is continued to be seen as supporting extreme racism in Malaysia.

"His continued silence in the face of this increased racism, anti-Chinese activism, and heightening of the Malay supremacy is shocking.

"He dearly needs to speak up against it to show the world that Malaysia is a mature democracy that is model of progress, wisdom and social harmony," said Jeffrey, who is also Sabah State Reform Party chief.

Alluding to recent racially intoned rantings by the Muslim Consumers Society and the Muslim Consumers Association Malaysia (PPIM), Jeffrey said if left uncontrolled it "will lead Malaysia into turmoil and anarchy".

Jeffrey said these recent developments had taken racism in Malaysia into "darker and more sinister" levels.

"The call is also a reflection of utter disregard to social harmony and is only the tip of the iceberg in emerging social conflicts in the nation.

"This is all due to gross mismanagement and neglect on the part of the federal leaders." he said

He said Najib's silence was shocking considering his ardent call for social harmony and unity under his 1Malaysia banner.

"The socio-political situation now is being made worse by the Home Minister who is so arrogant that he is asking more than half of the Malaysia's voters who voted against the BN to leave the country!

"Is Malaysia being purposefully led to descend into total chaos by its own leaders? Has this minister forgotten that he is the Home Minister for all Malaysians and not just the Umno/BN members and Malays?

"This behaviour by the Malay Muslim groups and the Home Minister is so unbelievable that one can only wonder if they have any leadership wisdom left in them.

"They make us reel back in utter disbelief at their lack of reason, good manners or diplomacy," he said.

Are Malay-Muslims ignorant?

Jeffrey also questioned the wisdom of these groups calling for the boycott of Chinese businesses.

"Don't the Malay-Muslim groups know that boycotting the Chinese businesses is impossible and even if it can be done it will spell disaster for the Malaysian economy?

"Are they so ignorant of the fact that by boycotting Chinese businesses they won't even be able to survive?

"How would they live without simple things like salt, sugar, coffee, tea, and noodles since these are supplied through Chinese importers and distributors? So don't even talk about electrical goods, building materials and cars.

"How do you deny the hard fact that the Chinese run the majority of the businesses in Malaysia and without them the country will collapse overnight?" he asked.

Jusuf expose, Anwar’s message to Najib

Posted: 20 May 2013 02:30 PM PDT

"During a meeting here (Jakarta) in April, Anwar had asked me to convey a message to Najib that he should allow a peaceful transition of rule. It was Anwar himself who came to me to talk about commitment. Hence, he should also fulfil his commitment. Commitment is not only the responsibility of one party."

(The Kuala Lumpur Post) - Former Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla has told Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to concede the fact that he had lost in the 13th General election and "move on" for the sake of Malaysia's political and economic stability.

In a telephone interview with the New Straits Times yesterday, Jusuf said Anwar had, in a meeting in Jakarta prior to the May 5 polls, requested Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to allow a peaceful transition of power if Pakatan won.

"During a meeting here (Jakarta) in April, Anwar had asked me to convey a message to Najib that he should allow a peaceful transition of rule."

"It was Anwar himself who came to me to talk about commitment. Hence, he should also fulfil his commitment. Commitment is not only the responsibility of one party."

"The losing party must accept the reality. That is (Anwar's) commitment. You must agree that you have lost and the loser should assist the winner (to steer the nation)."

"By right, everyone should fulfil their respective commitments. Anwar, Najib and I are beholden (to the commitment of) peaceful elections."

Jusuf's stance echoed the sentiments of Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob who had called on opposition supporters to respect the outcome of the election and distance themselves from uprisings to overthrow the government.

Anwar's deputy Azmin Ali had also joined the fray, stressing the importance of fulfilling the party's manifesto, instead of going to town to hold rallies at the expense of forsaking the people's mandate in Pakatan-ruled states.

Their remarks came following Anwar's campaign that included holding rallies in various locations nationwide to protest against what he alleged as electoral fraud that had "robbed" Pakatan of victory.

Jusuf, a long-time friend of Anwar, said the opposition leader should accept the election results, and reconcile with Najib for the good of the country.

It was reported yesterday that Jusuf had expressed his disappointment with Anwar over his reluctance to accept defeat and for rejecting any initiative to reconcile with his rivals in Barisan Nasional.

His disappointment was conveyed by Indonesia's former law and human rights minister Hamid Awaluddin, who was quoted by Indonesian national daily, Republika.

The daily had quoted Hamid as saying that Anwar had promised Jusuf that he would control his opposition coalition if he was defeated by Najib, who is BN chairman.

The report said despite claiming electoral fraud, Anwar had yet to prove his claims through legal means.

Meanwhile, political analysts said Anwar's statement that he would be arrested soon by police was typical of the opposition leader's penchant for theatrics.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Assoc Prof Dr Samsul Adabi Mamat said it was unfair for Anwar to preempt police action to gain his supporters' sympathy.

"All he is doing is creating unrest and unnecessary provocation in the current political climate."

International affairs and political cluster head of the National Professors' Council, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said Anwar's latest ploy was "not something new".

"It might be to create sympathy or to place the government in a bad light. Only he knows what his true intention is," he said.

Pakatan Rakyat slammed for abandoning Adam Adli

Posted: 20 May 2013 02:26 PM PDT

(ABN News) - Pakatan Rakyat has been criticised by supporters of Adam Adli for abandoning him in his hour of need. His supporters have expressed their anger in letters to news portals like Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider.

Theresa sent in a letter to Malaysiakini and she said: "To Pakatan, don't just talk big, but now allow Adam to be thrown to the wolves, when Adam stuck his neck out for Pakatan's so-called Blackout 505."

"Besides, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has also already washed his hands off and distanced himself from this kid Adam. Not only am I disappointed with Pakatan, I feel sorry that Adam could end up paying a high price sitting out in jail for people who don't take care of him and protect him."

"Hello Pakatan, where have all your volunteer lawyers gone? Why is Adam without legal representation?"

"I watched the video by Media Rakyat on Forum Mei 13 at the KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, and there were boatloads of PKR bigshots there talking, like Nurul Izzah, R Sivarasa, Tian Chua, besides Pak Samad, SAMM chief Chegubard, ABU people and Hisham Rais."

"My sympathy to Adam, his father and his whole family. My disgust to Pakatan politicians for their charade at the Forum Mei 13 that encouraged Adam and landed him in trouble."

In a letter to The Malaysian Insider Pravin Pillai wrote: "And Pakatan Rakyat, remember how we roared for you in Kelana Jaya? Could we hear you roar for Adam Adli? Roar. Not squeak."

Student activist Adam Adli was arrested on May 19 in Bangsar Utama where his office is.

He has been remanded for five days and is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.

It is believed he is being investigated for a speech he made during a public forum at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on May 13, during which he and several other activists urged the people to stage a massive street protest against electoral fraud and to topple the government.

Survey: Umno still the most popular

Posted: 20 May 2013 02:13 PM PDT

Umno is also dominant in Kelantan, acquiring 49.8% of the total votes as opposed to PAS' 41.1%, says a survey conducted by a Malay daily.

Alyaa Azhar, FMT

Umno remains the most dominant political party in almost all states including Kelantan, with the exception of Selangor, Penang and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, according to Malay daily Sinar Harian's post-13th general election (GE13) survey.

"Altogether, Umno managed to garner 3,416,310 votes and won 88 parliamentary seats out of the 120 it contested, with DAP coming in second due to winning 38 seats out of the 51 seats it contested.

"Although PKR and PAS had more popularity votes at 2,033,677 and 1,579,833 respectively, PKR only managed to win 30 seats out of the 99 seats it contested while PAS only managed to win 21 seats out of the 73 parliamentary seats," said the Malay daily.

Also, Malay voters were the determiners for Umno's win in GE13, thus giving Barisan Nasional (BN) the upper hand in winning the majority in Parliament and taking control of the federal government even though BN attained less seats as compared to the previous elections.

Azmi Hassan from the Geoinformation and Real Estate faculty of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) said that Umno was dominant in acquiring popularity votes compared to other parties due to the shifting of Malay voters' support to the BN coalition.

"It is also to be noted how in Kelantan, Umno managed to acquire 49.8% of votes as opposed to PAS which acquired only 41.1% of the total votes.

"In Kedah, Umno took over the reins from PAS by acquiring 45.28% of the total votes. Perlis also remains Umno's stronghold with the party winning all three parliamentary seats it contested with 55.55% from the total votes," said Sinar Harian.

Umno continues to be dominant in Perak when it obtained 24.64% of the total votes ahead of the other parties.

Umno also dominated other parties in Pahang by winning 55.5% of votes and winning 10 parliamentary seats it contested in GE13.

Although PKR continues to dominate by managing to win nine out of the 11 seats it contested in Selangor with a total vote-count of 550,950, Umno's influence, however, cannot be denied as the party managed to attain 335,406 votes as opposed to PAS' 270,506 and DAP's 253,302 respectively, according to the survey.

In Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor, Umno's influence is still formidable, leading other parties with votes accounting to more than 40% at each state.

Sabah, on the other hand, continues to be Umno's gem with the party dominating with 88.2% of votes.

Liow accepts Astro host apology over blackout posting

Posted: 20 May 2013 02:01 PM PDT

(The Star) - MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has accepted the apology by Astro AEC host Gan Jiang Han who posted a message that a blackout had allegedly occurred in Bentong that led to the Barisan Nasional winning the parliamentary seat in the May 5 polls.

Liow said the Astro AEC should also carry the apology as a news report in one of its shows.

"It must tell the truth and only then will the rumours stop spreading," Liow said in a statement Monday.

Liow had expressed his unhappiness over Gan's posting on his Facebook fanpage.

Liow had said that it misled the people into believing there was indeed a blackout at the Bentong counting centre.

Liow hoped that Gan would cooperate with the police in its investigation to establish how the blackout rumour began in the first place.

"The rumour is not only a form of character assassination, it also damaged the credibility of the Barisan and created anger and dissatisfaction among the public," he said.

On Monday, Sin Chew Daily reported that Gan had apologised to Liow.

Gan had said in a statement that he posted the message in his personal capacity and took responsibility over the controversy it had caused.

He added that he had deleted the message, clarified the incident and issued an apology on May 7.

Gan got Astro AEC into hot water when he posted on his Facebook that "when my child is born, I will ask him to write an essay with the title, The Blackout Night.

"The beginning of the essay would be on May 5, 2013, there was a stiff fight in the Bentong seat. Someone had said that he would cut his ears if it is lost, and then the counting process started, blackout..."

His message had been shared by 18,775 people and 73,576 people had clicked "like" within 15 hours after he posted it.

Several reporters as well as DAP assemblymen Chow Yu Hui (Bilut) and Lee Chin Chen (Ketari) clarified later that there was no blackout or any sudden "appearance" of a ballot box.

Liow retained his Bentong parliamentary seat in a close fight with DAP's Wong Tack.

48 NGOs to take part in PJ rally

Posted: 20 May 2013 01:57 PM PDT

(The Star) - Organisers of a planned rally here said some 48 non-governmental organisations and civil society bodies are expected to take part in the gathering on Saturday.

Spokesman Badrul Hisham Shaharin said the gathering, at the city council field next to the Amcorp Mall, would raise claims of electoral frauds of the recent GE13.

He added that it would not pre-empt the efforts of some political parties challenging the polls results.

When asked if the police had been notified of the proposed Pesta Suara Rakyat gathering, he merely said "it was under control".

"We are going to the streets not to overthrow the government or cause chaos but to demand that democratic rights be returned to the people," Badrul Hisham, also known as blogger Chegubard, told a press conference here yesterday.

The defeated PKR candidate for the Sungai Acheh state seat in Penang said the gathering would call for the resignation of Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof and his team to pave the way for a new committee answerable to Parliament.

He said another demand was for fresh elections to be held in seats where fraud was allegedly evident and a third demand was for all parties to support the formation of a people's tribunal to gather information of electoral irregularities.

On allegations the Opposition was leaning towards a "Malaysian Spring", he said it was merely psychological war by the authorities against the people.

Kg Tunku rep lodges police report over postings

Posted: 20 May 2013 01:54 PM PDT

(The Star) - Kampung Tunku DAP assemblyman Lau Weng San has lodged a police report over an alleged offensive and seditious posting in the Sayangi Selangor Facebook fan page.

The page uploaded an article regarding several strategies allegedly used by DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang to win the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat, said Lau, who lodged his report at the Sea Park police station here yesterday.

"The posting was uploaded on Friday," said Lau.

He urged the police to investigate the posting which could cause racial tension in the country.

He also called on the police to investigate Selangor Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed, who is allegedly behind the postings in the page.

Among the claims contained in the article was that Lim had garnered Malay support by donating to the surau and mosques in Gelang Patah, besides opening stores that sell items at prices much lower than those sold at the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M).

The postings also claimed Lim had offered RM100 to Malay youngsters in Gelang Patah to join DAP and that he also appointed Malay youths to create trouble among Umno, PAS and PKR.

Minister says won’t name ‘opposition leaders’ behind Sulu invasion

Posted: 20 May 2013 01:48 PM PDT

(Bernama) - The identities of three opposition leaders, who were said to be behind the Lahad Datu armed incursion, will not be divulged to avoid prejudice when the case is brought to court, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said all documents and detailed information acquired by the police and the Defence Ministry on the trio, two of them from the peninsular and another from Sabah, would be submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers for scrutiny.

Ahmad Zahid (picture) was responding to a call by SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee to him to name the three opposition leaders allegedly involved in the incursion by a group of armed terrorists from southern Philippines in February.

At the height of 'Ops Daulat' to flush out the terrorists, Ahmad Zahid was quoted as saying that the identities of the trio would be disclosed after the 13th general election to avoid accusations that the issue would be used for political expediency.

Ahmad Zahid was visiting Bukit Aman along with his deputy, Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi.

They were received by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
