Jeyakumar: Too ‘politically costly’ for BN to continue holding us Posted: 29 Jul 2011 12:40 AM PDT By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar asserted tonight that the order to release all Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) detainees had been a political decision and not because the "police had come to their senses". "They (Barisan Nasional) were losing so much popularity and support from the people that it just became too politically costly for them to keep holding us," he told reporters after addressing a crowd of supporters at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH). The first-term lawmaker also disagreed with Datuk Seri Najib Razak's claim earlier this evening that the release order had been in accordance with the rule of law and that the decision had been made by the police based on their "observations". "No, it was definitely because of pressure from the public. After over one month, there was no sign that public support for us was abating; in fact, it was going to escalate. People walking, people fasting all over the place .... it was getting too big for them," he continued. Najib, added Dr Jeyakumar, had made a "smart move" to allow the release of the six before things worsened for the BN government. "It was not because the police came to their senses or they became honest and professional. They were not," he said. He insisted that the police were bent on keeping the PSM 6 detained as a way to scare other Malaysians from voicing their dissent. "But it did not work. The people were brave and it was because of them that I am free today," he said. When asked for his plans in the coming days, Dr Jeyakumar said he may consider taking legal action against the authorities for his "unlawful" detention. "But we are just out and we have to sit down and discuss it," he said.

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:12 PM PDT By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider Parti Sosialis Malaysia's (PSM) six Emergency Ordinance (EO) detainees were given a heroes' welcome at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) here tonight when they arrived barely three hours after their surprise release. In stark contrast to the silence of their gloomy 28-day confinement, the six were met with boisterous applause and cheers from a lively crowd of PSM members and supporters, most garbed in the party's bright red shirts and brandishing banners and waving party flags. First to arrive was a smiling Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar, whose detention under the preventive law, the first for an MP in Malaysia, had elevated him to hero status over the past few weeks. The continued detention had also irked politicians from across the divide and drove the public to join the nightly vigils held outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters. As he stepped into the KLSCAH compound, Dr Jeyakumar was immediately accosted by scores of supporters who rushed to greet him with words of encouragement and to welcome him home. Also present to greet him were several notable personalities like PSM chairman Nasir Hashim, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenavasan. Speaking through a loudhailer, the soft-spoken bespectacled Dr Jeyakumar who was dressed simply in a gray shirt designed for a party campaign, immediately thanked Malaysians for his release. "Thank you, everyone. Thank you. If not for you, we'd all still be inside. Their plan was to keep us for two years, I think. "But because you Malaysians were united and supported us, we were freed today. This is people power. It is not the police who released us but the people. So, thank you, Malaysians," he said. Dr Jeyakumar began a hunger strike yesterday to protest the EO detention but the surprise order for his release and those of his five colleagues at 5.30pm this evening officially put an end to his plan. The crowd surrounding him erupted in more cheers and applause, breaking out in song and chants of "Hidup Rakyat!", "Mansuh EO" and "The people, united, will never be defeated". "I'm very, very sad that he had to go through that. Them keeping the six for another three weeks after the Bersih rally has caused many people to feel angry," said Ambiga. "Dr Jeyakumar is our most soft-spoken MP in Parliament. He has been fighting for the rights of the downtrodden, the orang asli community and the people. "But today, we cannot stop ... this is just the beginning. We not only want to abolish the EO and the ISA but we also want to ensure that no institution continues to be manipulated by a government that wants to rule forever and ever," added Nurul Izzah.

Surendran says again: Attempted murder Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:41 PM PDT
By Teoh El Sen, FMT PETALING JAYA: PKR vice president N Surendran, ignoring a threat of legal action, today repeated his assertion that there was an attempt to commit murder in the tear gassing of Bersih marchers at KL Sentral last July 9. Speaking at a press conference where reporters were shown videos to counter the police version of events during the march, Surendran accused the authorities of ignoring evidence of police brutality, which he said was abundant, and questioned the impartiality of Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail.PKR's video presentation came a week after police screened a collection of clips for the media to back their version of what happened on July 9. "The police version is inaccurate and false," Surendran said. "They have not responded to the serious incident that took place at the KL Sentral underpass. "Again I state that the attack should be classified as attempted murder." Surendran first uttered the accusation on July 20. Last Wednesday, police interrogated him for 45 minutes for making the statement. He told reporters afterwards that he was being investigated under the Penal Code on suspicion of making statements jeopardising public order. At today's press conference, he quoted from the Penal Code a definition of murder: "Without any excuse, A fires a loaded cannon into a crowd of persons and kills one of them. A is guilty of murder, although he may not have had a premeditated design to kill any particular individual." PKR's video evidence Revisiting the KL Sentral standoff, Surendran showed footage shot by FMT video journalist Saiful Hisyam Md Salleh as well as clips supplied by TV Selangor. Lawyers for Liberty coordinator Fadiah Nadwa Fikri gave a running commentary. "At minute 6.27 (of the FMT video), there were orders of 'Bawah, bawah', meaning they were planning on aiming directly at the protesters," she said. "This is the first unlawful act we want to point out." She also noted that the canisters had labels warning against shooting directly at people and shooting into an enclosed area. "At minute 7.28, you can hear the Brickfields district police chief, Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid, asking reporters to step aside to avoid being shot at. This shows that the police already intended to shoot directly at protesters regardless of what happened."

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:14 PM PDT By Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Six PSM (Parti Sosialis Malaysia) members, including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Devaraj Jeyakumar (picture), were released at 5.30pm this evening from their detention under the Emergency Ordinance (EO). The MP's brother, Selangor state executive councillor Xavier Jeyakumar, confirmed the news when contacted by The Malaysian Insider. "Yes, his wife has spoken to him. We are trying to confirm the details now," the PKR leader said. PKR vice president N. Surendran also said related paperwork was being processed at the Jinjang police station. According to The Star, the Attorney-General will decide on the next course of action for the six who were initially held on June 25 with 24 others in the run-up to the July 9 Bersih rally for allegedly attempting to revive communism and waging war against the Agong. |
Opposition bent on opposing government decisions: Najib Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:35 PM PDT
(Bernama) - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the opposition would always object to whatever decision made by the government to improve the country's electoral system.
He said when the government wanted to introduce the biometric system for voter verification in the general election, the opposition said using the indelible ink would be better. "And I believe if the government wants to use the indelible ink, the opposition will say the biometric system is better. "They just want to reject whatever we do. They want to make it controversial and to find fault. It's not a constructive position on their part. "They are not looking for something that can improve the system. They just want to find fault in the system," he told reporters after attending the 1Malaysia Youth Gathering at the Pendang Mini Stadium today. He said the government decided to use the biometric system "as it is a scientific system that cannot be manipulated compared to the indelible ink." "For the indelible ink, you can identify the source... you can get from other sources too and do the same thing. It's a loss to the people who cannot go (to vote)," he said. Earlier, in his speech, Najib said the opposition's action of disputing the use of the biometric system was only politically-motivated. He said he was not willing to be prime minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman if he had won in the general election where the results had been manipulated. "My friends (in BN) would also not want to be federal and state government leaders if they were not chosen the right way and according to the wishes of the people. "We will again leave our fate to the people when the time comes. We are only prepared to be leaders if we are legitimately chosen by the people." Najib said BN had never been afraid of a fair general election, and if BN had been able to manipulate the results, it would not have lost (five states in the last general election). "After the dark incident in the country's history on May 13, 1969, my late father (country's second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein) had absolute power.... had parliamentary and cabinet power. He had executive power and the power to make laws, but a BN leader was not power crazy. "When calm returned, he (Razak) gave back the power to the people and held elections. We won big but at other times, we lost some too," he said. Najib said BN had accepted election results that had favoured the opposition because it respected the Federal Constitution, so the opposition too must respect the Constitution. He also said that the July 9 illegal rally in Kuala Lumpur was only aimed at tarnishing the country's image abroad, causing the whole world to be confused or siding the demonstrators. Najib said the rally was organised when no one had before questioned the credibility of the country's electoral system and there had also been no evidence of any malpractice. Also present at the gathering attended by thousands, were Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Kedah Umno liaison chief Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who is also state Umno liaison deputy chief. |
'Perkasa rally called off to avoid clash among Malays' Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:06 PM PDT
(Yahoo News/Malaysiakini) - Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali claimed that he had called off the July 9 rally to counter the Bersih 2.0 march at the last minute in order to avoid a clash among the Malays. He said he issued an instruction for the Perkasa supporters to stand down about 90 minutes before they were to join the rally at the Titiwangsa lake garden at 2.30pm that Saturday. The decision was made by the Perkasa leadership after he sent 50 inflitrators, who pretended to be Bersih 2.0 supporters, to monitor the situation on the ground in Kuala Lumpur that day. "They told me that they (the Bersih 2.0 marchers) were all Malays. The Chinese only (made up) a small number, only one or two percent, and the Indians were also not that many. "I asked 'where are (DAP leaders) Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng', they said 'not there'. Then I asked who else were there? They said (PKR de facto leader) Anwar (Ibrahim) and (PAS president) Abdul Hadi Awang," Ibrahim added. "Had we gathered, we would not be able to stop the crowd from marching, then there will be loggerheads among the Malays," the politician told Internet TV station eTV in an exclusive interview last week. The recording was aired on Tuesday. Ibrahim said two other reasons lead to his "bold decision" to call off the rally - the decree issued by the Agong and another by the Selangor sultan against street demonstrations, as well as his intention not to divert the police's effort in dealing with the Bersih 2.0 rally. "So taking into consideration the decrees by the Agong and the sultan, taking into account (the interests of) all Malays and taking into account the focus of the police force in controlling Bersih, I made the bold decision not to have the gathering. I called off the gathering at 1pm. "If I went on that day, (we could have) easily (mobilised) 3,000 people. When I called it off, there were already 300 Perkasa members at Titiwangsa," he said.

Police seize blogger's iMac and modem Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:54 PM PDT
In his report, Tony Yew alleged that Chan's tweet contained seditious elements, which directly incited Christians to go against the government. (Yahoo News/Malaysiakini) - Police raid the home of blogger Chan Lilian in Penang and cart away her 27-inch iMac and a modem as part of their investigations into a tweet she sent last month. Chan, a videographer, is being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act for her tweet message, as well as Section 27 (5) of the Police Act for allegedly participating in the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur. If convicted, Chan faces a jail term of up to three years, a fine of not more than RM5,000, or both. Yesterday, four police officers from the cyber crime unit in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, questioned Chan for about an hour at the Jalan Pattani (northeast district) police headquarters in Penang. They then went to her house in Tanjung Bungah and spent two hours searching for "evidence". They also combed through eight files on her computer, took snapshots of her Twitter account and drew a diagram of her work area. The police team, which was led by investigating officer ASP Ridzuan Ibrahim, left about 8.30pm with Chan's iMac and modem. Asked by journalists about the seizure of Chan's prized iMac, Ridzuan replied, "No comment!" before slipping into the police car. Chan was accompanied by lawyer Tham Shien Shyong during her three-hour ordeal. "This is the price I have to pay for expressing my thoughts," a calm Chan told reporters later outside her house. "I maintain that I have no intention of inciting anyone - my tweet is restricted (to 900 members) but its privacy has been abused," added the mother of four. Chan, who is a temporary staff with a Penang government unit, vowed that she would not give up tweeting as she has the right to freedom of expression. "It is regrettable that this has happened. I tweeted as an individual and a blogger, and this has nothing to do with where I work (or my employer)," she said.

Eye on ‘Jacob the Jeweller’ after Rosmah’s ring denial Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:21 PM PDT
By Yew Hong Chieh, The Malaysian Insider KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's denial today that she bought a RM24 million Jacob & Co diamond ring has thrown a spotlight on the jeweller's alleged money-laundering activities. Questions have now arisen as to whether the name of the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had been used without her knowledge by criminal elements as part of illegal activities. Various opposition-friendly blogs had published screenshots of a Customs computer screen showing the ring, from New York celebrity jeweller Jacob and Co, was brought in under her name. Jacob & Co founder Jacob Arabo, whose custom diamond-encrusted wrist watches and chunky jewellery adorn Hollywood A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio and hip-hop stars Kanye West and Jay-Z, is no stranger to such allegations. The Uzbekistan-born Jew, described by the New York Times as the "Harry Winston of the hip-hop world", has twice tangled with US federal law enforcement agencies. In 1998, Arabo was arrested by the FBI for alleged criminal possession of stolen property. The charges were later dropped. He was arrested by the FBI again in 2006, this time for allegedly laundering US$270 million (RM810 million) for the notorious Detroit-based Black Mafia Family (BMF) drug gang and failing to report large cash purchases to the Internal Revenue Service. Arabo was accused of "facilitating the purchase of jewellery utilising the drug proceeds of (BMF leaders) Terry Lee Flenory, Demetrius Flenory in order to conceal the true source, nature and ownership of the funds involved in these transactions", according to the US District Court in Detroit. "Jacob the Jeweller", as he is known in hip-hop circles, would later plead guilty to a lesser charge of lying to investigators in exchange for the more serious money-laundering charges being dropped. According to the New York Post, the "King of Bling", as he was labelled by the tabloid, pleaded guilty in federal court in Detroit in 2007, agreeing to serve between 37 and 46 months behind bars and pay US$2 million in penalties.

Lynas races to start work on Malaysia plant Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:09 PM PDT
By Philip Wen, Sydney Morning Herald LYNAS CORP will submit plans demonstrating the safety of its Malaysian rare earths processing plant by next month, as it races to receive approval from government and regulatory bodies to operate by the end of the year. The safety plan, addressing the long-term storage of radioactive waste produced by the plant, being built in Kuantan, in the state of Pahang, is one of 11 recommendations imposed on Lynas by the International Atomic Energy Agency last month. The agency's independent review found no breaches of international safety standards. Lynas and Malaysia's atomic energy regulators have also agreed to complete a separate health study to try to appease local communities. Advertisement: Story continues below The plant has been the subject of public fears of possible radioactive contamination. There have been in sustained protests from residents and activists. Rare earths are coveted for the crucial role they play in a range of modern technologies, including hybrid cars, smartphones, iPads and flat screen televisions. China dominates 97 per cent of global production but has been restricting exports, prompting miners elsewhere to overcome complex hurdles to enter production and benefit from soaring rare earth prices. Arafura Resources said yesterday it had made ''substantial'' new rare earths discoveries at its Nolans Bore deposit in the Northern Territory. Alkane Resources signed a memorandum of understanding this week with Mintech for a zirconium joint venture. Meanwhile, fledgling rare earths miner Northern Minerals, in which Lynas owns a 7.6 per cent stake, surged as much as 15 per cent yesterday on news it had found ''significant'' quantities of heavy rare earths at its Browns Range project in northern Western Australia. In its quarterly activity report, Lynas said the indicative quarterly price for rare earths had increased 86 per cent in the three months to the end of June, and had already surged another 30 per cent so far this month. |
‘Tian was running away from riot police’ Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:06 PM PDT By Teoh El Sen, FMT PETALING JAYA: PKR today came to the defence of its vice-president Tian Chua by saying that he was actually running away from the riot police, and not charging at them, during the July 9 Bersih rally. Subang MP R Sivarasa explained that Tian Chua was running away from the police rather than attacking them during an incident at an underpass at KL Sentral. "Police seem to be focusing on Tian Chua running out of the underpass, trying to suggest that he was charging at the police and therefore they fired tear gas. But the videos show that that's a complete lie," said Sivarasa. "What Tian Chua was doing was that he was trying to get out of the space as quickly as possible. When coming out of the tunnel you can see from the video he was running to the right, out of the path of the tear gas." Sivarasa said if Tian Chua had any intention to attack the police, he could have come directly face-to-face with the light strike force. Sivarasa was speaking to the press at the PKR headquarters today where the party showed some video clips taken from the day of the rally, which strengthened its claim that the police acted in a brutal manner in dispersing the protesters. Last week, the police made public their own video clips to show that they were provoked by the protesters. They also claimed that Tian Chua had charged at them. Pointing to two video clips today, Sivarasa said these clips showed that Tian Chua had veered to the right and was immediately detained by the police together with others who followed him. "It was a foolish statement by the police and some bloggers had repeated it. Tian Chua knew the police were going to shoot tear gas and had made a judgment call to get out of the firing line. "The moment he moved, the shooting started and he was able to escape," said Sivarasa.

Dentist eyes Kapar seat in 13th GE Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:49 PM PDT
MCLM-backed candidate Dr Nedunchelian Vengu to take on PKR's S Manickavasagam (Free Malaysia Today) - The first Barisan Rakyat Independent Candidate (BRIC), Dr Nedunchelian Vengu, today announced that he will stand in Kapar in the 13th general election. The dentist was introduced by the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) as the fourth independent candidate in January this year. His choice to run in Kapar stems from two decades of social work and a thriving dental practice in the constituency. The Kapar seat is currently held by PKR incumbent S Manikavasagam. "I was born and raised in Kapar and I opened my first dental clinic there," Nedunchelian, 43, told a press conference at the MLCM headquarters this morning. "The people of Kapar are my classmates, patients and friends." "Education has been my most important agenda and MCLM has offered me a platform to take that agenda further. But my sole allegiance will be to the people of Kapar and my sole commitment will be to serve their interests." MCLM president, Haris Ibrahim, clarified that Nedunchelian is not an MCLM candidate but an independent who will receive full support from MCLM, including funding and resources. "But our endorsement of Dr Nedunchelian does not mean he represents MCLM," said Haris. "He is the rakyat's candidate, he will only represent the rakyat and will be at all times independent of MCLM." Nedunchelian added that he had accepted MCLM's support because the tenets of his personal campaign agenda fit with the movement's social inclusion agenda. He also said that he had previously held the position of MIC education chief but stepped down due to the party's rigid rules and regulations. "This was about 10 years ago and I only held the position for six months," he said. "But I found it difficult to pursue my agenda within the party's constraints so I resigned." "The only other official position I still hold is that of Indian community leader for Batu 11 in Kapar – a post which was given to me by the Klang district office." No word from PKR When asked whether PKR or Manikavasagam were aware of his candidacy, Nedunchelian replied that he hadn't spoken to the Kapar MP yet. Haris, meanwhile, said that he attempted to make contact with Manikavasagam but was unable to reach him. "I wanted to extend the courtesy of personally informing him of Dr Nedunchelian's candidacy instead of having him find out in the media," he explained. "When I couldn't reach him, I informed a top leader in PKR and received a text message that read 'noted'." To date, MCLM has only engaged in talks with DAP which was the only Pakatan Rakyat coalition member party to attend a roundtable talk in March. Haris reiterated that MCLM-backed candidates are intended to supplement and complement opposition candidates, and not compete with them. "We have no problems if our independent candidates are inclined to Pakatan as long as Pakatan is pro-rakyat," he said. "Our priority is to see a new government in Putrajaya."

Now MCA says Guan Eng is anti-Chinese Posted: 28 Jul 2011 12:49 PM PDT
By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider The MCA is now griping that Lim Guan Eng is sidelining the Penang Chinese community, claiming he has awarded all Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) contracts to Malays, Bumiputeras and Indian Muslims. Penang Wanita MCA chairman Tan Cheng Liang said today this was likely because the chief minister was "currying favour" with the non-Chinese community as the DAP has realised that it could not forever rely on support from the Chinese. "It is DAP's foresight that they realise they cannot forever rely on the Chinese to consolidate their political power in the next general election, but I hope that their currying favour among other races is not done at the expense of the Chinese," she said in a statement here. As such, Tan said Lim's anti-Chinese slant would erode the rights of the community, who makes up the majority of Penang's population. "Since DAP took over as the Penang state government, not a single Chinese contractor in all the five districts has been awarded contracts for the state's DID. "This is proof that despite the support from the Chinese for Lim Guan Eng and DAP, the interests of the Chinese have been threatened after DAP came into power," she said. Tan was referring to a statement Lim had purportedly made on Wednesday that the contractors in all five districts in Penang for DID contracts are Malays, Bumiputeras and Indian Muslims, with women accounting for 20 per cent. Ironically, the Penang administration under Lim's rule has often been accused by Umno, the MCA's partner in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) pact, of being racist by allegedly discriminating against the Malay community. But Tan insisted today that Lim's failure to award contracts to at least one Chinese contractor proves that he has been ignoring the community's support for him and his party. READ MORE HERE.

After Bersih, Pakatan to launch pre-polls Hari Raya blitz Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:57 AM PDT
By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider When thousands of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party members head home for the Hari Raya holidays next month, they will each be armed with specially-packed information kits and strict instructions from the opposition's strategists. Their mission: To launch a pre-election blitzkrieg for PR and keep the Bersih torch burning. Their target: The Malay heartlands outside the capital. The federal opposition hopes to get first dibs on campaigning for the Malay vote ahead of a general election expected soon and will trumpet PR's reform agenda in areas they believe have limited access to information. They will make full use of the Hari Raya holidays to do this and beginning from the month of Ramadan, PR members and supporters across the country will participate in "balik kampung" programmes aimed at spreading the "PR word". "Ramadan is not an excuse for us to sit back and relax. It is an important month for Muslims and Malays in Malaysia but besides our usual rituals and prayers, we must use the opportunity for our leaders and members to go back to their kampungs and bring with them these issues, these leaflets, to spread the PR word," PKR deputy president Azmin Ali told The Malaysian Insider. The Gombak MP said PKR has already prepared special information kits for the blitzkrieg, with each one explaining the chaos that erupted in the capital during Bersih's July 9 rally and highlighting PR's reform promises from its Buku Jingga. "We also called our 'Demi Rakyat' programme directors from each party division to the headquarters last week and we gave them all these information kits and the details and our secretary-general has explained to them what to do," he said.

Rosmah denies buying RM24m diamond ring Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:44 AM PDT
By Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has denied she had purchased a diamond ring worth over RM24 million, three weeks after the allegations surfaced in cyberspace. The wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak dismissed the allegation that was raised by a blogger, calling it yet another lie to slander her. "There is nothing I want to say because I have no time to address such things. Let (the blogger) say what he wants. "This is slander but what have I not experienced? I have experienced it all. So, rather than address this, it is better I pay attention to public issues as these are more important," she was quoted as saying by Berita Harian when accompanying her husband on his working trip to Kedah yesterday. Screenshots of a Customs computer screen showed the ring, from New York celebrity jeweller Jacob and Co, was brought in under her name.
