Jeyakumar: Too ‘politically costly’ for BN to continue holding us Posted: 29 Jul 2011 12:40 AM PDT By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar asserted tonight that the order to release all Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) detainees had been a political decision and not because the "police had come to their senses". "They (Barisan Nasional) were losing so much popularity and support from the people that it just became too politically costly for them to keep holding us," he told reporters after addressing a crowd of supporters at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH). The first-term lawmaker also disagreed with Datuk Seri Najib Razak's claim earlier this evening that the release order had been in accordance with the rule of law and that the decision had been made by the police based on their "observations". "No, it was definitely because of pressure from the public. After over one month, there was no sign that public support for us was abating; in fact, it was going to escalate. People walking, people fasting all over the place .... it was getting too big for them," he continued. Najib, added Dr Jeyakumar, had made a "smart move" to allow the release of the six before things worsened for the BN government. "It was not because the police came to their senses or they became honest and professional. They were not," he said. He insisted that the police were bent on keeping the PSM 6 detained as a way to scare other Malaysians from voicing their dissent. "But it did not work. The people were brave and it was because of them that I am free today," he said. When asked for his plans in the coming days, Dr Jeyakumar said he may consider taking legal action against the authorities for his "unlawful" detention. "But we are just out and we have to sit down and discuss it," he said.

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:12 PM PDT By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider Parti Sosialis Malaysia's (PSM) six Emergency Ordinance (EO) detainees were given a heroes' welcome at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) here tonight when they arrived barely three hours after their surprise release. In stark contrast to the silence of their gloomy 28-day confinement, the six were met with boisterous applause and cheers from a lively crowd of PSM members and supporters, most garbed in the party's bright red shirts and brandishing banners and waving party flags. First to arrive was a smiling Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar, whose detention under the preventive law, the first for an MP in Malaysia, had elevated him to hero status over the past few weeks. The continued detention had also irked politicians from across the divide and drove the public to join the nightly vigils held outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters. As he stepped into the KLSCAH compound, Dr Jeyakumar was immediately accosted by scores of supporters who rushed to greet him with words of encouragement and to welcome him home. Also present to greet him were several notable personalities like PSM chairman Nasir Hashim, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenavasan. Speaking through a loudhailer, the soft-spoken bespectacled Dr Jeyakumar who was dressed simply in a gray shirt designed for a party campaign, immediately thanked Malaysians for his release. "Thank you, everyone. Thank you. If not for you, we'd all still be inside. Their plan was to keep us for two years, I think. "But because you Malaysians were united and supported us, we were freed today. This is people power. It is not the police who released us but the people. So, thank you, Malaysians," he said. Dr Jeyakumar began a hunger strike yesterday to protest the EO detention but the surprise order for his release and those of his five colleagues at 5.30pm this evening officially put an end to his plan. The crowd surrounding him erupted in more cheers and applause, breaking out in song and chants of "Hidup Rakyat!", "Mansuh EO" and "The people, united, will never be defeated". "I'm very, very sad that he had to go through that. Them keeping the six for another three weeks after the Bersih rally has caused many people to feel angry," said Ambiga. "Dr Jeyakumar is our most soft-spoken MP in Parliament. He has been fighting for the rights of the downtrodden, the orang asli community and the people. "But today, we cannot stop ... this is just the beginning. We not only want to abolish the EO and the ISA but we also want to ensure that no institution continues to be manipulated by a government that wants to rule forever and ever," added Nurul Izzah.

Surendran says again: Attempted murder Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:41 PM PDT
By Teoh El Sen, FMT PETALING JAYA: PKR vice president N Surendran, ignoring a threat of legal action, today repeated his assertion that there was an attempt to commit murder in the tear gassing of Bersih marchers at KL Sentral last July 9. Speaking at a press conference where reporters were shown videos to counter the police version of events during the march, Surendran accused the authorities of ignoring evidence of police brutality, which he said was abundant, and questioned the impartiality of Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail.PKR's video presentation came a week after police screened a collection of clips for the media to back their version of what happened on July 9. "The police version is inaccurate and false," Surendran said. "They have not responded to the serious incident that took place at the KL Sentral underpass. "Again I state that the attack should be classified as attempted murder." Surendran first uttered the accusation on July 20. Last Wednesday, police interrogated him for 45 minutes for making the statement. He told reporters afterwards that he was being investigated under the Penal Code on suspicion of making statements jeopardising public order. At today's press conference, he quoted from the Penal Code a definition of murder: "Without any excuse, A fires a loaded cannon into a crowd of persons and kills one of them. A is guilty of murder, although he may not have had a premeditated design to kill any particular individual." PKR's video evidence Revisiting the KL Sentral standoff, Surendran showed footage shot by FMT video journalist Saiful Hisyam Md Salleh as well as clips supplied by TV Selangor. Lawyers for Liberty coordinator Fadiah Nadwa Fikri gave a running commentary. "At minute 6.27 (of the FMT video), there were orders of 'Bawah, bawah', meaning they were planning on aiming directly at the protesters," she said. "This is the first unlawful act we want to point out." She also noted that the canisters had labels warning against shooting directly at people and shooting into an enclosed area. "At minute 7.28, you can hear the Brickfields district police chief, Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid, asking reporters to step aside to avoid being shot at. This shows that the police already intended to shoot directly at protesters regardless of what happened."

Malaysia’s population hits 28m amid slowing growth Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:30 PM PDT
By Lee Wei Lian, The Malaysian Insider PUTRAJAYA, July 29 — Malaysia's population doubled in size from 13.7 million in 1980 to 28.3 million last year, revealed the 2010 census released today. The rate of growth in the last 10 years, however, was two per cent, which was lower than the 2.6 per cent population growth recorded between 1980 to 1990 and from 1990 to 2000. Bumiputeras numbered 17.5 million, or 67.4 per cent of the population, while Chinese made up 24.6 per cent of the population at 6.4 million, Indians 7.3 per cent of the population at 1.9 million while "others" made up 0.7 per cent of the population at 200,000. Foreigners, meanwhile, made up 8.2 per cent of the population at 2.3 million. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, said at the launch of the census report here today that Malaysia's fertility rate, although falling, was 2.3 per cent which is still higher than the replacement rate of 2.1 per cent. "This is good news," he said. "We need the critical mass of people to drive consumption-led growth." Asked about smaller countries such as Switzerland which has a population of just seven million but is one of the wealthiest and most advanced countries in the world, Nor Yakcop said that it was still good for Malaysia to have a growing population to support domestic industries. Former prime minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed had, in the 1980's, wanted Malaysia to achieve a 70 million-strong population. The UN recently projected that the world's population will hit seven billion in October this year, which is one billion more than just 10 years ago, raising questions about the sustainability of the world's population and the increasing strain on natural resources. Commodity prices have already hit record levels due to increased demand from fast developing economies such as India and China. But while much of the world's population growth is projected to take place in poor countries, developed economies are grappling with the problem of increasing longevity where a shrinking working population is expected to support a growing elderly population. Nor Yakcop pointed out that based on the census, Malaysia enjoyed the opposite trend whereby its dependency ratio had decreased from over 50 non-working people being supported by every 100 workers, to 48.5 non-workers for every 100 workers in 2010. |

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:14 PM PDT By Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Six PSM (Parti Sosialis Malaysia) members, including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Devaraj Jeyakumar (picture), were released at 5.30pm this evening from their detention under the Emergency Ordinance (EO). The MP's brother, Selangor state executive councillor Xavier Jeyakumar, confirmed the news when contacted by The Malaysian Insider. "Yes, his wife has spoken to him. We are trying to confirm the details now," the PKR leader said. PKR vice president N. Surendran also said related paperwork was being processed at the Jinjang police station. According to The Star, the Attorney-General will decide on the next course of action for the six who were initially held on June 25 with 24 others in the run-up to the July 9 Bersih rally for allegedly attempting to revive communism and waging war against the Agong. |
Mohd. Najib's time is running out. Posted: 28 Jul 2011 06:14 PM PDT
By Toffee He'll sure remember this song, it was from his time and it was an Elvis Number, "It's now or never" and those 4 words hold a lot of meaning to Mohd. Najib now more then it ever did. Najib Tun Abdul Razak is going in for a big shock, it may even be the cause of Mahathir Mohammed suffering a severe heart attack, I would not want to speculate more on that score, and to avoid that he -Najib, has to be extra careful in the selection of who stands where, in the next General Elections, not in the component parties but particularly in UMNO as deals have been struck to dump him come the next elections. So will Anwar become our next Prime Minister?

So which is it then? Is the DAP-led government of Penang neglecting the Malays or neglecting the Chinese? Can Umno and MCA please agree on this? Can we also hear whether MIC agrees with HINDRAF that it is actually the Indian Hindus who are the ones being neglected or does MIC want to contradict HINDRAF and declare that the Indian Hindus are being well looked after and are very happy, thank you very much? NO HOLDS BARRED Malaysia's Penang Wanita MCA: Why no DID projects given to Chinese (The Star/ANN) - Malaysia's Penang Wanita MCA wants to know why not a single state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) project was given to Chinese contractors. Its chairman Tan Cheng Liang said she believed the Chinese contractors had submitted tender applications for the projects. "Has the state deemed their applications incomplete." "I am aghast and unable to comprehend why isn't a single contract awarded to a Chinese contractor," said Tan in response to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's statement on July 27, that contractors in all five districts for the DID projects were Malays, bumiputras and Indian Muslims of which women accounted for 20%. Tan said since the DAP took over the state, not a single Chinese contractor in the five districts were given projects. "The DAP-led state government should not simply award contracts to bumiputras to make themselves look fair." "They should ensure that the contractors are capable of guaranteeing a successful completion of the projects and there will not be problems later," she said. Tan said there was proof that despite the support from the Chinese for Lim and DAP, the interest of the Chinese had been threatened after DAP came into power. "They realise that they cannot rely on the Chinese forever but I hope the curry favour among other races is not done at the expense of the Chinese," she said. ********************************* MCA is alleging that the DAP-led government of Penang is sidelining the Chinese and is favouring the Malays, Bumiputeras and Indian Muslims. MCA, in case some of you still don't know, is the second largest coalition partner in Barisan Nasional and is the original member of the Alliance Party that negotiated with the British for Merdeka for Malaya. Penang Wanita MCA chairman Tan Cheng Liang was referring to a statement Lim Guan Eng was said to have made two days ago that the DID contractors in all five districts in Penang are Malays, Bumiputeras and Indian Muslims, with women accounting for 20%. Umno, on the other hand, has claimed that since the new government took over in Penang in March 2008, the Malays have been sidelined and the 'racist' DAP-led Penang government just focuses on the Chinese. Now, while the 'husband' alleges that the Penang government neglects the Malays, the 'wife', on the other hand, alleges that the Penang government neglects the Chinese. Clearly this 'couple' no longer sees eye-to-eye on the issue of whether it is the Malays or the Chinese who are being neglected. MIC, the 'second wife', is in the meantime still foggy and blur (as usual) and is trying to figure out what stupid thing to say (as usual). MIC can't jump onto the bandwagon and allege that the Penang government is also neglecting the Indian Hindus. This is exactly what HINDRAF is claiming. So, if MIC claims the same thing, then HINDRAF can turn around and say, "Ah hah! Did we not say so? Even MIC agrees with what we say. That means HINDRAF was right all along. The Indian Hindus are being neglected." Anyway, this is what the people in Barisan Nasional are saying. Now, if someone from Pakatan Rakyat said something like this do you know what the opposition supporters would say? They would say MCA has been bought. MCA is a Trojan horse. MCA is trying to sabotage Barisan Nasional. MCA is secretly and maliciously trying to help the opposition by contradicting Umno. That is the advantage of being in Barisan Nasional. They allow you freedom to speak without calling you a traitor. But whether you still have freedom after you speak is another matter. Maybe not! But you do have freedom to speak in spite of not having freedom after you speak. So which is it then? Is the DAP-led government of Penang neglecting the Malays or neglecting the Chinese? Can Umno and MCA please agree on this? And can we also hear whether MIC agrees with HINDRAF that it is actually the Indian Hindus who are the ones being neglected or does MIC want to contradict HINDRAF and declare that the Indian Hindus are being well looked after and are very happy, thank you very much? Politicians! Now do you know why we need to guard against politicians? They will take pains to make sure that after almost 54 years of Merdeka we still focus on issues concerning Malays, Chinese and Indians and not look at things in the context of Malaysians. |
Opposition bent on opposing government decisions: Najib Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:35 PM PDT
(Bernama) - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the opposition would always object to whatever decision made by the government to improve the country's electoral system.
He said when the government wanted to introduce the biometric system for voter verification in the general election, the opposition said using the indelible ink would be better. "And I believe if the government wants to use the indelible ink, the opposition will say the biometric system is better. "They just want to reject whatever we do. They want to make it controversial and to find fault. It's not a constructive position on their part. "They are not looking for something that can improve the system. They just want to find fault in the system," he told reporters after attending the 1Malaysia Youth Gathering at the Pendang Mini Stadium today. He said the government decided to use the biometric system "as it is a scientific system that cannot be manipulated compared to the indelible ink." "For the indelible ink, you can identify the source... you can get from other sources too and do the same thing. It's a loss to the people who cannot go (to vote)," he said. Earlier, in his speech, Najib said the opposition's action of disputing the use of the biometric system was only politically-motivated. He said he was not willing to be prime minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman if he had won in the general election where the results had been manipulated. "My friends (in BN) would also not want to be federal and state government leaders if they were not chosen the right way and according to the wishes of the people. "We will again leave our fate to the people when the time comes. We are only prepared to be leaders if we are legitimately chosen by the people." Najib said BN had never been afraid of a fair general election, and if BN had been able to manipulate the results, it would not have lost (five states in the last general election). "After the dark incident in the country's history on May 13, 1969, my late father (country's second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein) had absolute power.... had parliamentary and cabinet power. He had executive power and the power to make laws, but a BN leader was not power crazy. "When calm returned, he (Razak) gave back the power to the people and held elections. We won big but at other times, we lost some too," he said. Najib said BN had accepted election results that had favoured the opposition because it respected the Federal Constitution, so the opposition too must respect the Constitution. He also said that the July 9 illegal rally in Kuala Lumpur was only aimed at tarnishing the country's image abroad, causing the whole world to be confused or siding the demonstrators. Najib said the rally was organised when no one had before questioned the credibility of the country's electoral system and there had also been no evidence of any malpractice. Also present at the gathering attended by thousands, were Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Kedah Umno liaison chief Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who is also state Umno liaison deputy chief. |
'Perkasa rally called off to avoid clash among Malays' Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:06 PM PDT
(Yahoo News/Malaysiakini) - Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali claimed that he had called off the July 9 rally to counter the Bersih 2.0 march at the last minute in order to avoid a clash among the Malays. He said he issued an instruction for the Perkasa supporters to stand down about 90 minutes before they were to join the rally at the Titiwangsa lake garden at 2.30pm that Saturday. The decision was made by the Perkasa leadership after he sent 50 inflitrators, who pretended to be Bersih 2.0 supporters, to monitor the situation on the ground in Kuala Lumpur that day. "They told me that they (the Bersih 2.0 marchers) were all Malays. The Chinese only (made up) a small number, only one or two percent, and the Indians were also not that many. "I asked 'where are (DAP leaders) Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng', they said 'not there'. Then I asked who else were there? They said (PKR de facto leader) Anwar (Ibrahim) and (PAS president) Abdul Hadi Awang," Ibrahim added. "Had we gathered, we would not be able to stop the crowd from marching, then there will be loggerheads among the Malays," the politician told Internet TV station eTV in an exclusive interview last week. The recording was aired on Tuesday. Ibrahim said two other reasons lead to his "bold decision" to call off the rally - the decree issued by the Agong and another by the Selangor sultan against street demonstrations, as well as his intention not to divert the police's effort in dealing with the Bersih 2.0 rally. "So taking into consideration the decrees by the Agong and the sultan, taking into account (the interests of) all Malays and taking into account the focus of the police force in controlling Bersih, I made the bold decision not to have the gathering. I called off the gathering at 1pm. "If I went on that day, (we could have) easily (mobilised) 3,000 people. When I called it off, there were already 300 Perkasa members at Titiwangsa," he said.

Police seize blogger's iMac and modem Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:54 PM PDT
In his report, Tony Yew alleged that Chan's tweet contained seditious elements, which directly incited Christians to go against the government. (Yahoo News/Malaysiakini) - Police raid the home of blogger Chan Lilian in Penang and cart away her 27-inch iMac and a modem as part of their investigations into a tweet she sent last month. Chan, a videographer, is being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act for her tweet message, as well as Section 27 (5) of the Police Act for allegedly participating in the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur. If convicted, Chan faces a jail term of up to three years, a fine of not more than RM5,000, or both. Yesterday, four police officers from the cyber crime unit in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, questioned Chan for about an hour at the Jalan Pattani (northeast district) police headquarters in Penang. They then went to her house in Tanjung Bungah and spent two hours searching for "evidence". They also combed through eight files on her computer, took snapshots of her Twitter account and drew a diagram of her work area. The police team, which was led by investigating officer ASP Ridzuan Ibrahim, left about 8.30pm with Chan's iMac and modem. Asked by journalists about the seizure of Chan's prized iMac, Ridzuan replied, "No comment!" before slipping into the police car. Chan was accompanied by lawyer Tham Shien Shyong during her three-hour ordeal. "This is the price I have to pay for expressing my thoughts," a calm Chan told reporters later outside her house. "I maintain that I have no intention of inciting anyone - my tweet is restricted (to 900 members) but its privacy has been abused," added the mother of four. Chan, who is a temporary staff with a Penang government unit, vowed that she would not give up tweeting as she has the right to freedom of expression. "It is regrettable that this has happened. I tweeted as an individual and a blogger, and this has nothing to do with where I work (or my employer)," she said.

Eye on ‘Jacob the Jeweller’ after Rosmah’s ring denial Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:21 PM PDT
By Yew Hong Chieh, The Malaysian Insider KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's denial today that she bought a RM24 million Jacob & Co diamond ring has thrown a spotlight on the jeweller's alleged money-laundering activities. Questions have now arisen as to whether the name of the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had been used without her knowledge by criminal elements as part of illegal activities. Various opposition-friendly blogs had published screenshots of a Customs computer screen showing the ring, from New York celebrity jeweller Jacob and Co, was brought in under her name. Jacob & Co founder Jacob Arabo, whose custom diamond-encrusted wrist watches and chunky jewellery adorn Hollywood A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio and hip-hop stars Kanye West and Jay-Z, is no stranger to such allegations. The Uzbekistan-born Jew, described by the New York Times as the "Harry Winston of the hip-hop world", has twice tangled with US federal law enforcement agencies. In 1998, Arabo was arrested by the FBI for alleged criminal possession of stolen property. The charges were later dropped. He was arrested by the FBI again in 2006, this time for allegedly laundering US$270 million (RM810 million) for the notorious Detroit-based Black Mafia Family (BMF) drug gang and failing to report large cash purchases to the Internal Revenue Service. Arabo was accused of "facilitating the purchase of jewellery utilising the drug proceeds of (BMF leaders) Terry Lee Flenory, Demetrius Flenory in order to conceal the true source, nature and ownership of the funds involved in these transactions", according to the US District Court in Detroit. "Jacob the Jeweller", as he is known in hip-hop circles, would later plead guilty to a lesser charge of lying to investigators in exchange for the more serious money-laundering charges being dropped. According to the New York Post, the "King of Bling", as he was labelled by the tabloid, pleaded guilty in federal court in Detroit in 2007, agreeing to serve between 37 and 46 months behind bars and pay US$2 million in penalties.

Lynas races to start work on Malaysia plant Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:09 PM PDT
By Philip Wen, Sydney Morning Herald LYNAS CORP will submit plans demonstrating the safety of its Malaysian rare earths processing plant by next month, as it races to receive approval from government and regulatory bodies to operate by the end of the year. The safety plan, addressing the long-term storage of radioactive waste produced by the plant, being built in Kuantan, in the state of Pahang, is one of 11 recommendations imposed on Lynas by the International Atomic Energy Agency last month. The agency's independent review found no breaches of international safety standards. Lynas and Malaysia's atomic energy regulators have also agreed to complete a separate health study to try to appease local communities. Advertisement: Story continues below The plant has been the subject of public fears of possible radioactive contamination. There have been in sustained protests from residents and activists. Rare earths are coveted for the crucial role they play in a range of modern technologies, including hybrid cars, smartphones, iPads and flat screen televisions. China dominates 97 per cent of global production but has been restricting exports, prompting miners elsewhere to overcome complex hurdles to enter production and benefit from soaring rare earth prices. Arafura Resources said yesterday it had made ''substantial'' new rare earths discoveries at its Nolans Bore deposit in the Northern Territory. Alkane Resources signed a memorandum of understanding this week with Mintech for a zirconium joint venture. Meanwhile, fledgling rare earths miner Northern Minerals, in which Lynas owns a 7.6 per cent stake, surged as much as 15 per cent yesterday on news it had found ''significant'' quantities of heavy rare earths at its Browns Range project in northern Western Australia. In its quarterly activity report, Lynas said the indicative quarterly price for rare earths had increased 86 per cent in the three months to the end of June, and had already surged another 30 per cent so far this month. |
‘Tian was running away from riot police’ Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:06 PM PDT By Teoh El Sen, FMT PETALING JAYA: PKR today came to the defence of its vice-president Tian Chua by saying that he was actually running away from the riot police, and not charging at them, during the July 9 Bersih rally. Subang MP R Sivarasa explained that Tian Chua was running away from the police rather than attacking them during an incident at an underpass at KL Sentral. "Police seem to be focusing on Tian Chua running out of the underpass, trying to suggest that he was charging at the police and therefore they fired tear gas. But the videos show that that's a complete lie," said Sivarasa. "What Tian Chua was doing was that he was trying to get out of the space as quickly as possible. When coming out of the tunnel you can see from the video he was running to the right, out of the path of the tear gas." Sivarasa said if Tian Chua had any intention to attack the police, he could have come directly face-to-face with the light strike force. Sivarasa was speaking to the press at the PKR headquarters today where the party showed some video clips taken from the day of the rally, which strengthened its claim that the police acted in a brutal manner in dispersing the protesters. Last week, the police made public their own video clips to show that they were provoked by the protesters. They also claimed that Tian Chua had charged at them. Pointing to two video clips today, Sivarasa said these clips showed that Tian Chua had veered to the right and was immediately detained by the police together with others who followed him. "It was a foolish statement by the police and some bloggers had repeated it. Tian Chua knew the police were going to shoot tear gas and had made a judgment call to get out of the firing line. "The moment he moved, the shooting started and he was able to escape," said Sivarasa.

Britain will never humiliate Najib Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:01 PM PDT
By Mariam Mokhtar, FMT The United Kingdom expelled the remaining Libyan diplomats from the London Embassy on July 27, but it had little to do with democracy despite the British claims. The announcement was more a calculated move to protect British interests in Libyan oil and minerals. Plus the fact that the EU, including Britain, found that Muammar Gaddafi was a good repeat customer for arms. Hopeful Malaysians thinking that Britain would mete out the same treatment to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak should desist from harbouring such thoughts. Britain will never humiliate Najib. After the red carpet treatment and the various receptions at Mansion House, Downing Street and Buckingham Palace, Najib is practically the "golden boy" of the Far East. Malaysians yearning for a democratic Malaysia will be searching for parallels with the Libyan people. There are many. The Libyans have had 42 years of tyranny under Gaddafi; we had 54 years of Umno-BN. Gaddafi is famed for his tent meetings where leaders glorify him. His portrait is draped over buildings and in public places. No one dares to criticise him in public. It is no different for Malaysians. Any dissenting voices are silenced with our draconian laws. Najib's lieutenants distinguish themselves by singing praises in public about him. Didn't Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob claim that he could mobilise three million people to support Najib on Facebook? When Najib returned from Europe last week, having cut short his vacation, thousands turned up at the airport to welcome him. The more intellectually challenged in this crowd thought Najib was magnanimous. If they cared to think a bit deeper, Najib was panicking about William Bourdon's visit, the French lawyer who was in Malaysia to lecture about the Scorpene scandal. Najib subsequently deported Bourdon. Nevertheless, it is common knowledge that the busloads of people greeting Najib are handsomely rewarded for their efforts. Another similarity between Libya and Malaysia are the personal links the two leaders have with western nations. Gaddafi's son, Saif, graduated from the London School of Economics and is closely linked to rich and powerful people in Europe and America. In a British government trade and investment guide, Najib is described as an economics graduate from UK and someone whose rule is transparent – mere window-dressing to attract investors. There is no mention of Malaysia's human rights abuses. The driving force One critical similarity between Libya and Malaysia is the rejection of the democratic ideals of their people by the two leaders. Gaddafi's response to pro-democracy marchers has been particularly brutal, leaving hundreds of civilians dead. The Malaysian government's response towards its own pro-democracy march has been violent though not with the same brutality as Libya's. The repression of the Bersih 2.0 marchers has been condemned worldwide. Najib has brushed these concerns aside and claimed that the march was illegal, that there was a communist plot to topple the King and that the police were provoked. He stressed Malaysian elections were clean. British Prime Minister David Cameron would be naïve to believe these excuses. However, any Malaysian who thinks Britain will intervene on our behalf will be disappointed. The driving force is trade and economy. Britain's economy is in the doldrums so when Najib touts for business between the two countries, he is welcomed. Libya, just like Egypt, procured arms on a large scale from Britain. Malaysia is no different. The Brits would not risk Najib shopping elsewhere. Might there be a slim chance France is prepared to drop all charges in the Scorpene scandal provided Najib purchases French armaments? Who knows.

Dentist eyes Kapar seat in 13th GE Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:49 PM PDT
MCLM-backed candidate Dr Nedunchelian Vengu to take on PKR's S Manickavasagam (Free Malaysia Today) - The first Barisan Rakyat Independent Candidate (BRIC), Dr Nedunchelian Vengu, today announced that he will stand in Kapar in the 13th general election. The dentist was introduced by the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) as the fourth independent candidate in January this year. His choice to run in Kapar stems from two decades of social work and a thriving dental practice in the constituency. The Kapar seat is currently held by PKR incumbent S Manikavasagam. "I was born and raised in Kapar and I opened my first dental clinic there," Nedunchelian, 43, told a press conference at the MLCM headquarters this morning. "The people of Kapar are my classmates, patients and friends." "Education has been my most important agenda and MCLM has offered me a platform to take that agenda further. But my sole allegiance will be to the people of Kapar and my sole commitment will be to serve their interests." MCLM president, Haris Ibrahim, clarified that Nedunchelian is not an MCLM candidate but an independent who will receive full support from MCLM, including funding and resources. "But our endorsement of Dr Nedunchelian does not mean he represents MCLM," said Haris. "He is the rakyat's candidate, he will only represent the rakyat and will be at all times independent of MCLM." Nedunchelian added that he had accepted MCLM's support because the tenets of his personal campaign agenda fit with the movement's social inclusion agenda. He also said that he had previously held the position of MIC education chief but stepped down due to the party's rigid rules and regulations. "This was about 10 years ago and I only held the position for six months," he said. "But I found it difficult to pursue my agenda within the party's constraints so I resigned." "The only other official position I still hold is that of Indian community leader for Batu 11 in Kapar – a post which was given to me by the Klang district office." No word from PKR When asked whether PKR or Manikavasagam were aware of his candidacy, Nedunchelian replied that he hadn't spoken to the Kapar MP yet. Haris, meanwhile, said that he attempted to make contact with Manikavasagam but was unable to reach him. "I wanted to extend the courtesy of personally informing him of Dr Nedunchelian's candidacy instead of having him find out in the media," he explained. "When I couldn't reach him, I informed a top leader in PKR and received a text message that read 'noted'." To date, MCLM has only engaged in talks with DAP which was the only Pakatan Rakyat coalition member party to attend a roundtable talk in March. Haris reiterated that MCLM-backed candidates are intended to supplement and complement opposition candidates, and not compete with them. "We have no problems if our independent candidates are inclined to Pakatan as long as Pakatan is pro-rakyat," he said. "Our priority is to see a new government in Putrajaya."

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:26 PM PDT By Sembang-Sembang Forum How could I not make that trip? For almost a month, Najib had been promoting it while Khairy and Ibrahim Ali were equally enthusiastic in their invitations. The police and that fat cat at the transport company made it appear as though an obstacle challenge run was being hosted in KL. After all, I've always wanted to try that new sport. On the eve of the rally, the bus dropped me off Pudu Station. No check points along the North-South highway. People from the East coast got it tough. Every car was checked. People were questioned as to why they wanted to go into the city and were required to provide the addresses where they were going stay in KL. Many cars were sent back. In Gombak, there was a four-hour long queue. No buses were running from Bentong. Incredibly, a couple even paid RM 72.00 each for a taxi ride from Bentong to KL. Since China Town is near to the Merdeka Stadium, I decided to stay there even though I knew it would be a police fortress and possibly a mass detention centre the next day. I shared a room with an old and two new friends. By midnight, we heard that the Special Branch were checking the hotel guest lists and were going from room to room looking for Bersih T-shirts. Fortunately, they did not raid our hotel. By midnight, Kampong Baru mosque had been blocked off. The next morning, meeting arrangements had still not been finalised. Text messages were flying around. The three original meeting places were heavily blockaded. Sogo and Dewan Bandar KL had hundreds of police patrolling the area. The National Mosque was shut down. Nine persons had been arrested at Masjid Jamek nearby that morning. People were milling around in China Town. By now, Police and SB were everywhere. Nobody paid them much attention anyway. Only a few shops were open. By noon, Jalan Sultan and Petaling Street were jam packed. Then we heard that the Unit Amal, the advance group of PAS, had started to march from the Pasar Seni just a block away. Some groups from across the river were blocked off from joining us. Tear gas was fired. By 1.00pm Jalan Sultan had become another starting point. The streets were full and people had to move towards Kota Raya-Pudu junction. The crowd filled the junction to the brim for half an hour but could not move towards Bukit Bintang as the FRU ( riot police) had blocked off the road in front of Tung Shin Hospital. Khairy Jamaluddin and his gang were at Bukit Bintang. Soon, a helicopter was hovering above us. Another police team with acid cannons and tear gas arrived at the Maybank building, sandwiching the crowd in between. Chemical-laced water that was sprayed into the crowd reached as far as the main entrance of Maybank. Tear gas was fired right into the crowd. A boy was badly gassed and had to be rushed to the hospital. As the crowd retreated into the back alley opposite the Pudu Bus Station and behind Tung Shin Hospital, more tear gas was fired into the back alley. I saw four canisters fired into a compound next to the hospital. A group of 20 odd policemen began to shout and arrest people. I was among the last few to run into the the waste land in front of the Bursa Malaysia with the police hot on our heels. The rain provided a brief respite for the stinging pain we suffered from the tear gas. The crowd walked along Jalan Raja Chulan and Jalan Sultan Ismail. At each junction, they were joined by more groups who had been broken off earlier. We soon become a one kilometer long train of protesters along the road, attracting onlookers from hotels and staff. Some tourists even joined us. By now the crowd had regained their spirit and shouting "Bersih, Bersih! ", " Hidup Rakyat!", " Reformasi!", "Allah Akhbar!". A dozen policemen nearby smiled and readily posed for some to take their photos. "Senyum, muka akan naik Facebook nanti!" ("Smile, your photo will be up in Facebook later!") A traffic policeman stopped his bid Suzuki bike at the junction and let the crowd walk into Jalan Ampang. There we were met by another equally long trail of protesters. The people were jubilant! We had regrouped! Everyone yelled and clapped joyfully. That was the the peak of the march when spirits were high and hearts united. A police van carrying officers was given right of way while the crowd clapped and laughed while someone shouted " Turun, Turun!" to invite them to join us. By now the crowd stretched endlessly. It seemed as though the trail of protesters was two kilometres long. We stopped at the KLCC Junction and sang the national anthem"Negara Ku" and shouted more slogans rejoicing that we had had a successful march. All in all, we had walked in the centre of KL for four hours and had withstood the numerous brutal attacks by the police. Finally regrouped and re-united as one determined people, KL was ours to walk with no cars on the roads. The rain had cleared the polluted air of KL. Women and men of all races and ages gave one another salts when facing the assault of a tea gas attack. Willingly, they shared water to rinse off the acid sprays, some arguing and holding out the police to let others escape. In between, others could be seen sharing biscuits, getting to know each other and and generally happy that we had gathered because we shared the same aspirations. Half an hour later, another acid cannon truck appeared and started spraying at the crowd that ran into KLCC garden, Avenue K and further down the road. Twelve mounted police on their horses complete with riot gear and baton trotted down the road. At Ampang Park, another team of FRU were waiting across the road. Soon, the crowd began to disperse to go home. We had made our point. Mission accomplished. As we travelled home by bus, we received an sms that 59 year-old Encik Baharuddin bin Ahmad, husband of Puan Rosni Malan ( Head of Women's section at Setiawangsa Branch, PKR) had collapsed and died after tear gas was fired into the crowd at KLCC. Earlier, we also heard news that Anwar Ibrahim was injured and fell while his bodyguard was hit in the face by a tear gas cannister fired directly at them. Undeniably, the rakyat had been orderly and peaceful throughout the rally. Those who were there bear witness to the widespread violence committed by the police.

Now MCA says Guan Eng is anti-Chinese Posted: 28 Jul 2011 12:49 PM PDT
By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider The MCA is now griping that Lim Guan Eng is sidelining the Penang Chinese community, claiming he has awarded all Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) contracts to Malays, Bumiputeras and Indian Muslims. Penang Wanita MCA chairman Tan Cheng Liang said today this was likely because the chief minister was "currying favour" with the non-Chinese community as the DAP has realised that it could not forever rely on support from the Chinese. "It is DAP's foresight that they realise they cannot forever rely on the Chinese to consolidate their political power in the next general election, but I hope that their currying favour among other races is not done at the expense of the Chinese," she said in a statement here. As such, Tan said Lim's anti-Chinese slant would erode the rights of the community, who makes up the majority of Penang's population. "Since DAP took over as the Penang state government, not a single Chinese contractor in all the five districts has been awarded contracts for the state's DID. "This is proof that despite the support from the Chinese for Lim Guan Eng and DAP, the interests of the Chinese have been threatened after DAP came into power," she said. Tan was referring to a statement Lim had purportedly made on Wednesday that the contractors in all five districts in Penang for DID contracts are Malays, Bumiputeras and Indian Muslims, with women accounting for 20 per cent. Ironically, the Penang administration under Lim's rule has often been accused by Umno, the MCA's partner in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) pact, of being racist by allegedly discriminating against the Malay community. But Tan insisted today that Lim's failure to award contracts to at least one Chinese contractor proves that he has been ignoring the community's support for him and his party. READ MORE HERE.

Unjustified detention prompts Kumar to launch hunger strike Posted: 28 Jul 2011 12:23 PM PDT PSM Central Committee member and Kumar's wife Rani Rasiah, together with party colleagues, announcing today that the detained MP has started a hunger strike Aliran is gravely concerned to hear that MP Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, one of the Parti Sosialis Malaysia 6 who have been unjustly and unjustifiably held in detention under the Emergency Ordinance, has decided to go on hunger strike. PSM Central Committee member and Kumar's wife Rani Rasiah, together with party colleagues, announcing today that the detained MP has started a hunger strike
We know Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, a long-standing and outstanding Aliran member, well enough to know that he does NOT engage in such acts for theatrical effect. Rather, given his steadfast and tenacious character in facing threats and intimidation from the police before, there is every reason to expect that Jeyakumar Devaraj conduct his hunger strike with complete seriousness.
At the same time, knowing he has a poor heart condition that has required treatment and hospitalisation during the period of his detention, we can only be alarmed at the potential damage to his health that this action may bring about.
We understand his frustration and impatience with the endless and pointless attempts by his police interrogators to extract confessions of guilt where none exists except in the imagination of the Special Branch officers and the political masters whom they serve, in particular Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak and Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
Perhaps our politicians have become so used to believing that all politics is about perceptions and images that can be moulded by lies, distortions and propaganda that they cannot anymore recognise that there can be politics of the highest moral level, such as that exhibited by Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj and his fellow detainees from PSM.
Politicians like Najib and Hishammuddin and the Inspector-General of Police have been issuing irrelevant and self-serving warnings about how Bersih 2.0 was trying to import the Arab Spring into Malaysia. Let them, who try to hoodwink the Malaysian public and frighten others with images of chaos, remember how the uprising in Tunisia began with the needless self-immolation of one protester.
We in Aliran, together with other concerned citizens, non-partisan but admiring and supportive of the courageous stance of Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj and the other members of the PSM 6, demand their immediate release from an unjust imprisonment.
Free Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj! Release the PSM 6 unconditionally! Now!

After Bersih, Pakatan to launch pre-polls Hari Raya blitz Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:57 AM PDT
By Clara Chooi, The Malaysian Insider When thousands of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party members head home for the Hari Raya holidays next month, they will each be armed with specially-packed information kits and strict instructions from the opposition's strategists. Their mission: To launch a pre-election blitzkrieg for PR and keep the Bersih torch burning. Their target: The Malay heartlands outside the capital. The federal opposition hopes to get first dibs on campaigning for the Malay vote ahead of a general election expected soon and will trumpet PR's reform agenda in areas they believe have limited access to information. They will make full use of the Hari Raya holidays to do this and beginning from the month of Ramadan, PR members and supporters across the country will participate in "balik kampung" programmes aimed at spreading the "PR word". "Ramadan is not an excuse for us to sit back and relax. It is an important month for Muslims and Malays in Malaysia but besides our usual rituals and prayers, we must use the opportunity for our leaders and members to go back to their kampungs and bring with them these issues, these leaflets, to spread the PR word," PKR deputy president Azmin Ali told The Malaysian Insider. The Gombak MP said PKR has already prepared special information kits for the blitzkrieg, with each one explaining the chaos that erupted in the capital during Bersih's July 9 rally and highlighting PR's reform promises from its Buku Jingga. "We also called our 'Demi Rakyat' programme directors from each party division to the headquarters last week and we gave them all these information kits and the details and our secretary-general has explained to them what to do," he said.

Rosmah denies buying RM24m diamond ring Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:44 AM PDT
By Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has denied she had purchased a diamond ring worth over RM24 million, three weeks after the allegations surfaced in cyberspace. The wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak dismissed the allegation that was raised by a blogger, calling it yet another lie to slander her. "There is nothing I want to say because I have no time to address such things. Let (the blogger) say what he wants. "This is slander but what have I not experienced? I have experienced it all. So, rather than address this, it is better I pay attention to public issues as these are more important," she was quoted as saying by Berita Harian when accompanying her husband on his working trip to Kedah yesterday. Screenshots of a Customs computer screen showed the ring, from New York celebrity jeweller Jacob and Co, was brought in under her name.

Your Honour, I am no prophet. I can't claim to be guided by God, at least not in the way the Prophets of old were. But what have we learned from the examples of the Prophets? Basically, what we have learned is we must not be afraid of challenging the system and not to fear reforms. To do that, we must speak out, debate and enter into discourse. NO HOLDS BARRED Malaysia's Internal Security Act allows the government to detain you without trial indefinitely. The initial detention is not more than 60 days during which time they will decide whether you can be released or should be further detained in the Kamunting Detention Centre. ************************************ Your Honour, first of all I thank you for the opportunity offered me to try to convince you why I should be released and allowed to go home. I realise that, normally, detainees would arrange for a lawyer or a team of lawyers to argue their case and that the proceedings are conducted in the same way as in a court of law. Your Honour, the Honourable Minister has declared me a threat to national security based on his standards and interpretation. Can one man make this sole decision on behalf of 28 million Malaysians? Does his view reflect that of the majority of Malaysians? |
WIKILEAKS: OPPOSITION JOURNALIST DETAINED UNDER THE INTERNAL SECURITY ACT Posted: 28 Jul 2011 01:00 AM PDT
This is the second time Raja Petra has been detained under the ISA. The government of then Prime Minister Mahathir detained Raja Petra under the ISA in April 2001 for his involvement in former DPM Anwar Ibrahim initiated "reformasi" movement. He was held for 53 days before being unconditionally released, reportedly due to pressure from the King, the late Sultan of Selangor who was Raja Petra's uncle. The current Sultan of Selangor is his cousin. THE CORRIDORS OF POWER Raja Petra Kamarudin

E.O. 12958: DECL: 09/12/2018 TAGS: PGOV, KDEM, MY SUBJECT: OPPOSITION JOURNALIST DETAINED UNDER THE INTERNAL SECURITY ACT
REF: KUALA LUMPUR 787
Classified By: Political Section Chief Mark D. Clark, reason 1.4 (b and d).
1. (C) Summary: Malaysian police on September 12 arrested controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows for detention without trial. Raja Petra's arrest came days after Prime Minister Abdullah threatened to use the ISA to clamp down on those allegedly stoking racial and religious tensions. The arrest stands as a warning to the growing Internet media, but also sends a signal to the political Opposition, which has vowed to topple Abdullah's coalition later this month, that the UMNO-led government could take stern measures to defend itself. End Summary. 2. (SBU) Malaysian police detained Raja Petra Kamarudin, prominent blogger and editor of the controversial website "Malaysia Today", under the Internal Security Act (ISA) on September 12. The ISA allows for detention without trial. This is the first time the Act has been implemented for blogging. Raja Petra's detention came days after Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi told reporters that the government would use the ISA on those who stoke racial and religious tensions, following inter-racial feuding in this coalition and mounting challenges to Abdullah's authority and political position (Septel). 3. (U) Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar, who approved Raja Petra's ISA detention order, told reporters that the blogger was detained under Section 73(1) of the ISA because he was deemed a threat to security, peace, and public order. The Minister explained that Raja Petra's detention came in the wake of various statements published by him in his blog "Malaysia Today," the latest being a commentary which allegedly ridiculed Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Syed Hamid stated, "We have called and advised him many times following the publishing of his statements but he has continued to write, so much so that they (the statements) could pose a threat (to security and public order)." The Minister added that under Section 73(1) of the Act, Raja Petra would be detained for 60 days and the police will do an assessment during the period. Syed Hamid added "if they feel he should be held more than 60 days, the police will then refer to me". Traditionally the minister will accept the recommendations made by the police and sign the order under Section 8(1) of the Act, which allows the person to be detained for renewable two-year periods. 4. (U) This is the second time Raja Petra has been detained under the ISA. 5. (U) Raja Petra's arrest came a day after the Cabinet ordered the Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC) to re-instate access to all blocked websites, including Raja Petra's "Malaysia Today" website (which was blocked on August 27). Energy, Water and Communications Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor stated on September 12 that the Cabinet ordered the move because there were other "harsher" laws in the country, including the ISA, to "control the irresponsible dissemination of information over the Internet and to bring those irresponsible websites and blogs to book." 6. (C) Comment: Malaysia's on-line news sources and blogs have blossomed over recent years as an alternative to the government dominated mainstream media. This trend has only increased after the March 8 elections, in which Abdullah and his UMNO party suffered a major setback. Raja Petra is considered the most outspoken and controversial Internet journalist, and is often a proponent of opposition views. Aside from his ISA arrest, Raja Petra faces sedition charges for articles implicating Deputy Prime Minister Najib in an ongoing high profile murder case. Raja Petra's arrest is another sign of insecurity on the part of Abdullah and the UMNO party. The government's use of ISA sends a strong warning to other opposition bloggers to curb their activities. This arrest may intimidate some activists, but it also could result in a backlash by the independent media and bloggers, and increase public disaffection with Abdullah's leadership. 7. (C) As PM Abdullah and his UMNO party become increasingly concerned over threats to bring down their government through the crossover of 30 more BN members of Parliament, Raja Petra's arrest also will be interpreted here as a warning to the political opposition and its leader Anwar Ibrahim. Opposition officials consistently have expressed concern that the government could invoke ISA if they advance too far. While not determinate given the fluid political situation and UMNO's disarray, today's arrest of Raja Petra lends support to the view that the UMNO-led government will take stern measures to defend itself. End Comment. 8. (U) The Embassy offers the following draft "if asked" press guidance. Q: WHAT IS THE U.S. REACTION TO THE ARREST TODAY (SEPTEMBER 12) OF BLOGGER RAJA PETRA KAMARDUDIN UNDER MALAYSIA'S INTERNAL SECURITY ACT (ISA)? A: We understand from press accounts that Malaysian police detained Raja Petra, who is associated with the "Malaysia Today" website, under an article of the Internal Security Act covering threats to "security, peace, and public order". We cannot comment further on the specific grounds for the Malaysian government's actions. We are aware that Raja Petra also faces legal complaints and charges of sedition related to information posted on the website. The United States firmly believes that freedom of the press and freedom of speech are fundamental components of a vibrant democracy. Freedom of expression is a basic right embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The peaceful expression of political views is a cornerstone of democratic rights and practice, as is the impartial application of the rule of law. (IF ASKED SPECIFICALLY ON MALAYSIA'S USE OF THE INTERNAL SECURITY ACT) A: As a matter of principle, we hope that countries refrain from using national security laws to curtail the peaceful expression of political views and media freedom. He is determined that all these people get sent to pasture so that he remains the last man standing. THE CORRIDORS OF POWER Raja Petra Kamarudin
Three weeks ago, there was a report concerning Tan Kay Hock's company, George Kent, getting the RM1.5 billion Ampang-Line Light Railway Transit (LRT) project. He did not say he has already got the project but that he is confident of getting it. Two days ago, the Minister of Transport announced the RM7 billion 197-kilometre Gemas-JB electrified double-tracking project (EDTP). This project has not been officially awarded to anyone yet but it appears like 'the market' already knows who may be getting it. You can read both reports below. According to the Minister, the Gemas-JB stretch is already in the final stage of design. He declined to comment whether the project, which is only due to be tendered out towards the end of this year, would be open to 'foreign parties'. Nevertheless, Tan Kay Hock, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's golf buddy, is already telling everyone that his company is going to get the job, most likely in joint venture with China Harbour Engineering Co Ltd (CHEC). CHEC is the company that is building Penang's Second Bridge in joint venture with UEM Builders Bhd, an Umno company. The bridge costs RM3 billion, up RM2 billion from the original budget of RM1 billion. (I wonder whose pocket this additional RM2 billion is going into). Many feathers are being ruffled, not because Tan Kay Hock is getting all the multi-billion projects, but because of his bragging. He is shooting his mouth off to all and sundry about his relationship with the Prime Minister. And he is bragging about how he is sabotaging all his competitors, the other tycoons. Tan Kay Hock has trained his guns on Quek Leng Chan, Low Keng Huat, Syed Mokhtar al Bukhary, Francis Yeoh, Lim Kok Thay, Chua Ma Yew, Vincent Tan, Danny Tan, Ta Kim Yan, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, and even the Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. He is determined that all these people get sent to pasture so that he remains the last man standing. These people can accept competition. It is, after all, part of business. But what they can't accept is when you 'throw sand into their rice bowl', as what the Chinese would say. And this is what Tan Kay Hock is doing. And because of that he has made many very powerful enemies. And since they know Tan Kay Hock gets away with murder only because of his relationship with Najib, they will have to hurt Najib to get back at Tan Kay Hock. Najib already has many enemies of his own. Those enemies alone are a handful. The last thing that Najib needs are more enemies, which Tan Kay Hock is making and who will now become Najib's enemies as well. But this is good for Muhyiddin. Now, Tan Kay Hock's enemies will become Muhyddin's friends. And with them all backing Muhyiddin, and with billions at their disposal, Muhyiddin would be well poised to challenge Najib for the Umno Presidency. Sometimes this is how fate works. An enemy of my enemy becomes my friend. And a friend of my enemy becomes my enemy. So we have Najib-Tan Kay Hock versus Muhyiddin and all the rest. And Muhyiddin and all the rest make a more formidable force to take on the Prime Minister. Najib has to be careful with the friends he chooses. When your friend has too many enemies these become your enemies as well. And Tan Kay Hock will help us prove this theory. Mere speculation, you might say? Well, remember a couple of years ago Malaysia Today published Statutory Declarations signed by six police officers who alleged that the ex-IGP, Musa Hassan, had links with the Chinese underworld and that he was behind the drugs, prostitution, loan shark and gambling syndicate? The six police officers were subsequently charged for 'lying', just like I was when I signed my Statutory Declaration in April 2008. And, today, the court acquitted these six police officers. This would mean what they signed in their SDs was true and not a lie. So, did Malaysia Today lie when we said that the IGP is a crook? Six police officers said the same thing and the court agreed with them. Yes, what is 'speculation' today is proven true later. And what may be considered 'rumour' becomes fact some time down the road. So let us see whether this 'speculation' and 'rumour' about Tan Kay Hock becomes fact once his company wins the RM7 billion Gemas-JB double-tracking project -- which has not even been tendered out yet but which Tan Kay Hock is already telling everyone is his. ***************************************** Gemas-Johor Baharu double-tracking project to be tendered out by year-end, says Minister (Bernama, 26th July 2011) -- The tender for the 197-kilometre Gemas-Johor Baharu electrified double tracking project (EDTP) will be done before year-end, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said today. The stretch is already in the final stage of design, he said, but declined to state if the tender would be open to foreign parties. "The Ipoh-Padang Besar and Seremban-Gemas lines are 70 and 90 per cent complete respectively," he added, after officiating a forum on "Powering the Rails in Malaysia," here. The Gemas-Johor Baharu sector is the final package for the EDTP. It was previously stated that the Gemas-Johor Baharu line is worth RM7 billion because it does not only comprise the building of a double-tracking system but also a transport hub with a capacity to rival the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Singapore. Kong said the rail sector is poised to emerge as a catalyst in the rapidly changing landscape of Malaysia's public transportation system once all the projects comes to a conclusion. He said the EDTP in the northern section is slated for completion at end-2013 and the line to Johor by 2016. Asked if the Komuter Service would be extended from Batu Caves to Selayang, he said the government is considering the possibility. "There has been a request from the public for the extension. At the moment we are still looking at the possibility. There will be a long term need for it and the extension is seen as the most viable," he added. **************************************** George Kent bullish about LRT job bid (Business Times, 7th July 2011) - George Kent (Malaysia) Bhd, an engineering group, is confident of winning the Ampang-Line Light Railway Transit (LRT)'s extension mega infrastructure project worth RM1.5 billion. The chances of getting the project is very good, its Chairman, Tan Sri Tan Kay Hock told reporters after the company's annual general meeting today. He said the company's bid for the project was strengthened by George Kent's previous experience of handling government contracts and its achievements. "We are about to hand over the RM97.75 million Kuala Lipis Hospital in Pahang to the Ministry of Health, and I guess this is one of the very few hospitals delivered on time. George Kent only tenders for projects that we think we can do, thus, we don't see any negative points for not winning the tender," he said. Prasarana Bhd is expected to announce the winner of the Ampang LRT extension project by September this year. Tan also said the company, which also produces water meters and the casing for the meters, has embarked on a RM50 million plan to upgrade its manufacturing facilities in Puchong, Selangor to accommodate higher sales in the meter and Original Equipment Manufacturing businesses. He said the present plant was already producing at a maximum capacity. With the expansion, George Kent aims to double its production capacity to two million completed meters and two million pieces of non-meter brass parts per annum. George Kent's pre-tax profit for the first quarter ended Apr 30, 2011 jumped to RM4.8 million from RM3.9 million in the same quarter last year. Its revenue, however, slipped to RM30.7 million from RM32.5 million previously. Tan said the demand for meters from Hong Kong, Macau, Middle East, Puerto Rico and Colombia remained strong. "The company has also penetrated Vietnam and Laos, where we expect good returns," he said, adding that the company expects to sustain its growth as the year progresses. |

At the "BERSIH 2.0 Crack-Down: "EO Another ISA" Forum" last night, it must have been difficult for Dr Prema Devaraj, younger sister of Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, to recount the memories of the ordeal following the detention of EO6. Not many could have pulled it through but Prema did - beautifully! Her face, though weary, did not belie the grief within her. The sea of faces looking right at her must have given her the inner strength she needed to speak so movingly. On that fateful night, she recounted how there were only ten supporters waiting outside the Kepala Batas Police Station and she wished that there could have been more that evening to cry for their release - the volume of support might have rattled the police.

Can BN deny paying US bloggers? Posted: 27 Jul 2011 06:41 PM PDT
A UK-based investigative news blog claims their research 'clearly links' America's 'New Ledger' to Umno-Barisan Nasional. According to SR founder-editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown, Umno-BN's 'dirty tricks' public relations campaign began just after the general election in 2008 when the Anwar Ibrahim-led opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, swept into power in five states. (Free Malaysia Today) - Online news portal Sarawak Report (SR) has challenged Umno/Barisan Nasional to deny its ties with US-based blogsite New Ledger and other associated blogs. The portal claimed the ruling coalition and its leaders had commissioned the various blogsites in the US to defame its political opponents including SR. According to SR founder-editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown, Umno-BN's 'dirty tricks' public relations campaign began just after the general election in 2008 when the Anwar Ibrahim-led opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, swept into power in five states. "Our research shows the dirty tricks campaign is clearly financed by BN. "The New Ledger was launched in 2009 as the main vehicle for these commissioned attacks. Throughout 2010 and 2011 they have focused more on Anwar than on any other subject! "(Sarawak Chief Minister) Taib (Mahmud) has also now hired them to run a sustained defamation campaign against us (SR). "But our research has clearly established the online campaign against Anwar and Sarawak Report as being commissioned by Umno/BN and Taib. "We therefore, challenge Umno and BN to deny our reports that its party leadership is paying New Ledger and other online blogs to defame its opponents," she said. Misleading Malaysians A July posting on SR noted that New Ledger's whole campaign's game plan was "to bounce back articles that have been placed in the United States websites into anonymously run blogs in Malaysia and then work on getting the stories into Malaysia's mainstream media, as if they had originated from a reputable source." The posting named 'Malaysia Watcher' is one of the websites managed by the New Ledger team. "New Ledger writers like to refer to Malaysia Watcher as an independent website, which they use as a resource, but in fact the sites 'bounce' stories off each other to build them up. "In this way the Umno-BN were conniving to mislead the Malaysian public and trick them into thinking that Anwar is also despised in America and has lost his influence in the US establishment," it said. Naming the foursome who formed the core of the New Ledger writing team – Racheal Motte, Christopher Badeaux, Leon Wolf and Brad Jackson – the posting said these were 'people with no profile in the United States or recognised expertise in Malaysia." It described the reports by these writers as malicious and one-sided and dismissed them 'as laughable'

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 06:33 PM PDT Dr Michael D Jeyakumar's wife reveals that the PSM leader will go on a hunger strike until all the six are charged or freed. (Free Malaysia Today) - Detained PSM leader Dr Michael D Jeyakumar has started a hunger strike since this morning until all the six party activists held under the Emergency Ordinance are released or charged, said his wife today. R Mohana Rani, who had tried to change her husband's mind, said the police have not budged from their original stand despite the PSM six cooperating during interrogation. "He (Jeyakumar) believes that the police and government have their own agenda and aims. "He has given his full cooperation since being remanded," she told FMT, adding that her husband signed three reports, including a 45-page report in Penang where he was first arrested. Now, the authorities had prepared an 80-page report, but Jeyakumar decided not to sign it as he considered the investigation futile. Apart from the Sungai Siput MP, the others under detention are PSM deputy president M Sarasvathy, central committee members Choo Chon Kai and M Sukumaran, Youth chief R Saratbabu and Sungai Siput branch secretary A Letchumanan. They were arrested in Kepala Batas on June 26 while distributing leaflets calling on the public to support Bersih 2.0′s demands for free and fair elections. The authorities later accused them of waging war against the King. They were then re-arrested on July 2 under the EO which allows the police to detain suspects for up to 60 days. Meanwhile, PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan could not confirm if Jeyakumar had started his hunger strike.

Have you got your halal certificate yet? Posted: 27 Jul 2011 05:39 PM PDT
Hotel operators which have yet to obtain halal certificates from the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) have been urged to get their certifications to ensure that the food and drinks they served during Ramadan are halal. NO HOLDS BARRED Jakim director-general Othman Mustapha said the department had simplified the certification process and it can now be obtained within a day. "We have sent out letters to them and about 80 per cent of hotels in the Federal Territories have obtained their certifications." "There are also special officers to process the certifications should an urgent approval is needed," he told reporters after opening the Federal Territories Nasyid Festival 2011 at the Islamic Centre complex, here today. He said hotel operators who failed to display the halal certificate can be fined under the Trade Descriptions Act 1972. "We will carry out operations from time to time. We will also act based on complaints from the public," he said. -- (Bernama) ****************************************** Jakim: Yes, can I help you? Hotel: Is this where I apply for the halal certificate for my hotel? Jakim: It depends. Hotel: Depends? Jakim: Yes, are you a local-owned hotel or foreign-owned hotel? Hotel: Foreign-owned. Jakim: This counter, counter number one, is for local-owned hotels. The next counter, counter number two, is for foreign-owned hotels. Hotel: Okay, thank you. Jakim: Yes, can I help you? Hotel: Hey, hold on! You're the same officer from counter number one. Jakim: Yes, we have only one officer on duty today. Hotel: But you have ten counters. Jakim: Yes, counter number one is for local-owned hotels, counter number two for foreign-owned hotels, then we have counters number three to ten for other applications like restaurants, supermarkets, and so on. Hotel: But why did you ask me to move to counter number two? Why can't you just serve me from counter number one if you are handling all applications? Jakim: Procedure. Hotel: Never mind. I want to apply for a halal certificate for my hotel. Jakim: Foreign-owned? Hotel: Yes, I already told you. Foreign-owned. Why ask again? Jakim: You told the officer at counter number one. This is counter number two. Hotel: But you are the same officer at counter number one. Oh, never mind. Jakim: Have you filled in the form? Hotel: Yes I have. Here it is. Jakim: But this is Borang A. You must fill in Borang B. Hotel: What's the difference? Jakim: Borang A is for hotels registered under the Registrar of Businesses. Yours is registered under the Registrar of Companies. So must fill in Borang B. Hotel: Where do I get Borang B? Jakim: At counter number ten. Hotel: But there is no officer at counter number ten. Jakim: I am also the officer for counter number ten. Hotel: Yes, I know, you already told me there is only one officer on duty today. So why can't you just give me the form here? Jakim: Cannot. You must go to counter number ten. Procedure. Hotel: Okay, okay, I will go to counter number ten. See you over there. Jakim: Yes, can I help you? Hotel: You know what I want. I want Borang B. Jakim: For foreign-owned hotel registered under the Registrar of Companies? Hotel: Yes, yes, yes. Jakim: No need to get angry. I am just doing my duty. Hotel: Okay, okay, I know, procedure. Jakim: Your hotel sells halal food? Hotel: Yes, we sell only halal meat, fish, vegetables…all halal Jakim: Fish and vegetables definitely halal. No need for halal certificate. Only need halal certificate for meat. You buy your meat from halal butcher? Hotel: Yes, from halal butcher. Jakim: You have the halal certificate from the butcher? Hotel: No, I don't. But there is a halal sign on the packing. Jakim: How do you know it is really halal? It could be a fake halal sign. There are many fakes nowadays. Hotel: I don't know whether it is genuine or a forgery? I go by the halal sign on the packing. The packing says the meat is halal so I assume it is halal. Jakim: Cannot. We must be sure. You must ask them to show you the halal certificate from Jakim. They can't simply put a halal sign on the packing unless they first have a Jakim halal certificate. Hotel: But my suppliers are overseas. How would they get a Jakim halal certificate? Jakim: Jakim will visit the overseas factory and check first. Then we will issue them the halal certificate. Hotel: So when can you visit these overseas factories then? Jakim: The factories must first invite us. Hotel: Then you will go there? Jakim: No, we will then schedule a visit. But they must send us the flight tickets and book the hotels for our officers at their own cost. Hotel: The factories have to pay for one of your officers to visit them so that you can certify that their factory is halal? Jakim: No, not one officer. Ten officers. Hotel: You need to send ten officers overseas just to certify that the factory is manufacturing halal meat? Jakim: Yes, if not we cannot confirm that their meat is halal. Hotel: Okay, never mind, we will stop selling imported meat and just serve local meat. Would that be okay? Jakim: Yes, that is okay as long as you can show the halal certificate from the supplier. Hotel: Okay, we also sell beer. Does the certificate cover this as well? Jakim: No, beer is haram. We cannot issue a halal certificate for that. Hotel: But we can sell beer? Jakim: Yes. Hotel: But we can't sell meat unless we can prove it is halal? Jakim: No. Hotel: Can we accept credit cards? Jakim: Yes. Hotel: But credit cards involve interest. Is that not haram? Jakim: Interest is haram. Hotel: So the meat must be halal but you can pay by credit card even though interest is haram? Jakim: That is correct. Hotel: And we can employ Malay staff who are Muslims? Jakim: Yes, you can. In fact, if you have no Malay staff you cannot get a hotel licence under the rules of the New Economic Policy. Hotel: But our hotel has a bar, disco, karaoke lounge, massage centre and everything that is haram to Muslims. We can, or must, employ Muslims? Jakim: Yes. Hotel: But their salaries would come from haram sources. Jakim: No problem. Even government staff get paid from revenue from banks, finance companies, money-lending, liquor, bars, night clubs, massage parlours, gambling, lotteries, casinos, cigarettes, and so on. Hotel: That is allowed? Jakim: Yes, allowed. Hotel: But aren't all those businesses haram? Jakim: Yes, they are haram. Hotel: So banks, finance companies, money-lending, liquor, bars, night clubs, massage parlours, gambling, lotteries, casinos, cigarettes, and so on are allowed but meat that is not halal is not allowed? Jakim: That is correct. The meat must be halal. And Jakim will not issue a halal certificate unless you can prove it is halal. So you must sponsor ten officers to go overseas for two weeks to visit the factory first before we can issue the halal certificate. Hotel: Two weeks? Why so long? Jakim: We need one whole day to visit the factory and the other 13 days for rest after the long journey. Hotel: I think never mind. We will stop selling imported meat, just sell local meat, and we will continue to sell beer and run our bar, disco, karaoke lounge and massage centre where most of our revenue comes from anyway. Jakim: No problem. Then you can get a Jakim halal certificate.

Explain, Bersih 2.0 tells ‘bad boy’ Tian Posted: 27 Jul 2011 03:40 PM PDT
Tian Chua finds himself in the hot seat following a Bersih 2.0 video of him charging at the FRU. (Free Malaysia Today) - PKR vice-president Tian Chua has been asked to explain a video clip that clearly showed him leading a charge at the FRU during the Bersih rally on July 9. The clip (below) showed the crowd facing off with the police at the KL Sentral tunnel moments before multiple rounds of tear gas were fired at them. Tian Chua was seen standing in the front while the Bersih 2.0 leaders were seen urging the crowd to move back. Then Tian Chua counted down from three to one and led a charge straight at the FRU who fired at them. The clip was uploaded by Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Haris Ibrahim on his blog earlier today. The blog post entitled, "Confirmed: Tian Chua was a bad, bad boy!" demanded an explanation from the Batu MP. "Tian Chua, you have some serious explaining to do," Haris wrote. "You showed disrespect to the Bersih 2.0 leadership that was present there, especially (Bersih 2.0 chairperson) Ambiga (Sreenevasan) and you were leading the rally. "More importantly you took it upon yourself to alter a peaceful rally to one of aggression, and in doing so, put many out there at risk to life and limb," he said. Tian Chua declines to comment When contacted, Tian Chua declined to comment on the video and repeated his earlier statement that he would only respond to an official police charge against him. "I don't think it it appropriate for me to comment on this video clip," he said. "If the police have evidence then they should charge me and I will defend myself in court." The clip however was included in the police version of the Bersih rally. That version was screened to the media last week during which the police pointed out that Tian Chua had provoked them into firing the tear gas. "I'm very troubled by the video," Haris told FMT. "When I saw the line of FRU on that day I suggested to Ambiga that we ask the crowd to sit and that the Bersih 2.0 leaders peacefully approach the FRU. "I didn't hear the countdown nor the call to charge. All I heard was the sound of shooting. Two days later eye-witnesses told me about Tian Chua's actions, I read FMT's report of the police screening and I recently received this video clip," he said. Bersih 2.0 leaders condemned the police for the unprovoked firing but an upset Haris pointed out that Tian Chua's actions now exonerated the FRU and validated police claims of crowd aggression. uFWduXFANAI

Haslinah Yacob bows out of MCLM due to a clash of priorities and unpreparedness for politics. (Free Malaysia Today) - The Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) has lost one of its four candidates for the 13th general election after Haslinah Yacob withdrew her candidacy last month. Haslinah, who was introduced as MCLM's third candidate in January, was the movement's first female candidate and was scheduled for deployment with the others in March. The 49-year-old former Awam president was reportedly handpicked by MCLM president Haris Ibrahim for her dedication to grassroots and advocacy work on women's rights and empowerment. FMT understands that she was slated to contest in Wangsa Maju where she would have faced incumbent Wee Choo Keong. However, Haslinah decided that she was unprepared for the political arena and informed the movement that she was pulling out last month. "I made the mistake of taking on two new things this year; the candidacy in January and the opening of a women's shelter in April," she told FMT. "Suddenly I found myself being stretched too thin and I was overwhelmed by the demands from both sides. I had to ask myself which one took priority and it was the shelter." Haslinah also admitted that she belatedly realised the challenges that came with starting from scratch in an unfamiliar constituency. A decade of social work had taught her that making inroads into the grassroots was a lengthy process and speeding it up in time for the general election was simply not feasible. "It was a a very difficult decision but I truly felt that I would be short-changing MCLM and my constituency if I went ahead," she said. "I believe someone else would be able to better serve the constituents at this point." "I'd also like to make it clear that this has nothing to do with MCLM and I continue to support the movement and its ideology a hundred percent. "It was a personal decision and yes, I'm very disappointed with myself."

Confirmed : Tian Chua was a bad, bad boy! Posted: 27 Jul 2011 02:54 PM PDT
THE PEOPLE'S PARLIAMENT Twitter buddy S. Aroki provided the link to this video that confirms what I was told by the 3 eye witnesses. Tian Chua, you have some serious explaining to do. Malaysian refugee swap spells human rights disaster Posted: 27 Jul 2011 02:29 PM PDT
The Conversation On Monday, Australia and Malaysia signed a deal that will mean 800 refugees that have arrived in Australia will be swapped with 4,000 verified refugees from Malaysia. This deal from both Australian and Malaysian perspectives seems mind boggling. For Australia, if the policy is not implemented properly and human rights of refugees are seen to be abused then Julia Gillard's Labor government will face political disaster. For Malaysia, it's out of character with its long-term foreign policy of limited engagement and could embarass the nation by putting a global spotlight on Malaysia's terrible human rights record. How the refugee deal fits in with Malaysia's foreign policy strategyThe current Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak has a clear strategy when it comes to foreign policy. Firstly, to improve his personal international profile to compensate for declining domestic popularity. And secondly to directly improve Malaysia's economic fortunes by convincing international investors & entrepreneurs to invest in Malaysia. But there are serious implications to Najib's strategy. Malaysia is very gradually moving away from its long-held position of non-alignment and limited engagement towards a tighter alliance with the US and two of its closest allies in the region – Singapore and Australia. Under Najib, Malaysia's relationship with the U.S., Australia and Singapore is the closest ever. The number of difficult deals that Najib has delivered with these countries has made him appear to be an important asset. One perspective is that Malaysia has opted to resolve the refugee matter at the bilateral level rather than through regional (Bali process) or multilateral (UN) channels. But also the refugee swap deal falls into this broader trend of raising Najib's international profile. A puzzling policyBut what is puzzling is the fact that Najib would accept this trade-off between a higher profile for himself among government leaders for public humiliation. It is inevitable that due to the intense media scrutiny around this deal, Malaysia's atrocious human rights record will be put under the spot light. If this is the principle reason Malaysia signed such a deal, then whose objectives were really being considered – Najib's personal needs or the country? Another theory is that the generous payments from the Australian government maybe trickling in to companies related to the ruling regime. The Australian government will need to make public who are the beneficiary companies from this deal.

If there is no trust in the people who run the system, it doesn't matter how 'fool-proof' the technology is. By jaykayenn The recent announcement by the Elections Commision to use biometric systems at the polls was instantly met with criticism and scepticism. The EC claims that the biometric system is a "fool-proof" system, while opposing parties went on to question the competence of the EC in deploying, maintaining and securing such a system. For me, the technical merits of this, or in fact, any system is rather irrelevant. One may argue that there are several known methods of circumventing a fingerprint reader. Or that the records of voters are unreliable, etc. If we continue along this path, we soon find that 'biometric system' is just a pair of words with no absolute definition. Without a detailed set of definitions, open to peer review, it could mean just about anything the EC wants it to mean. Then there's the matter of implementation. Who is to know if the voting process is being carried out exactly to specifications? What safeguards are there against deviation and fraud? Who makes the observations and certifications? It all comes down to trust. If there is no trust in the people who run the system, it doesn't matter how 'fool-proof' the technology is. For example, there are cryptographic algorithms available these days that are statistically impossible to crack; yet, people get busted and data gets stolen all the time. Not because of any technical failure, but because the people who were trusted with the keys gave in. Read more at: http://www.jaykayenn.com/2011/07/the-technology-of-trust/

Pusat Pentadbiran Negeri Sabah adalah Sabah for Sabahans …..? (FMT) - LAHAD DATU: Children from Chinese-native parents in Sabah are decrying the National Registration Department's (NRD) unwillingness to specify their mixed ethnicity in their MyKad applications. Sources here said the NRD required Sino-Kadazans or Sino-Dusuns to choose between Chinese, Kadazan, Dusun or Murut ethnicity for their MyKads. NRD is insisting that the community use the generic term "Sino-Native" in the documentation. The policy has angered the mixed Chinese-native community in the state. They have refused to subscribe to the NRD ruling and are demanding that their particular native groupings be recognised. Kadazan, Dusun or Murut communities are inherent to Sabah. Sensing an implosion following a recent complaint by a Chinese association in Ranau, Sabah deputy chief minister Yee Moh Chai said it was not right for the federal government to deny Sabahans of mixed parentage their nativity. "In Sabah by virtue of its traditions, customs and beliefs everyone recognises the existence of Sino Kadazan, Sino Dusun and others because inter-marriages here are norm. "They exist and you cannot deny it. If a Sino Kadazan wants to be known as Sino Kadazan then we must respect it. "If it is a fair system that we want in this country, then NRD should only register the people's name minus the particulars like race and religion. It (documents) should only state their nationality as 'Malaysian". "If you want other particulars to be included then you must include all categories and not be selective, " he said recently. 'Right treatment' Yee said as far as Sabah was concerned there were many things that were being done here and that was not done in other parts of Malaysia. "I think they (peninsula) must recognise and learn from us in terms of harmony and living together. It is the 1Malaysia ideology promoted by the Prime Minister," he added.

Police report made by Blog House Tony Yew against 5xmom and her religion Posted: 27 Jul 2011 11:58 AM PDT
Blog House Malaysia is supposedly the online media watchdog for the Media Consultative Council, claiming to defend bloggers on their site. Bloggers pay a membership fee for their services. Is Tony Yew now telling all bloggers that Blog House Malaysia will not tolerate a person's random thoughts? By Lilian's friend (at least, I'd like to think so) A police report was made against a videographer attached to the Penang government over her tweet allegedly related to the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9. Utusan had claimed she was inciting the Christians. The Investigating Officer from Brickfields and a cyber crime personnel will be going to Penang to take her statement at the IPD DTL police station around 5.30 pm on Thursday 28 July 2011. The videographer, Lilian, had sent a personal tweet in her protected, private Twitter account. This is what she wrote: As soon as she sent this off, a person by the name of Tony Yew who is the Secretary of Blog House Malaysia demanded she retract what she had said because he claimed she was mixing politics with religion. She replied on Twitter:
However, there was no response from him on Twitter. Instead, he made a police report against her. Tony Yew appears to have intentionally ignored the fact that it was written at night, in a flippant manner. Then, he did not give her the chance to clarify her statement if he had indeed misunderstood it. Of course, Utusan Malaysia had to publish the story where the original Tweet with "I think" and the "Don't you think so? I go sleep now, bye-bye :)" being omitted, sensationalising her statement to seem like she was trying to gather supporters for her thoughts. Utusan article link here: This is what she said when she wrote to me: 1. My tweets are protected and Tony Yew whom I have added into my account has abused it Therefore, the accusation that I am inciting is false. Her case has not gone to court yet, and I hope it will not reach that stage. Are our private thoughts at stake now? I think we all feel the mainstream media is always twisting facts. Are they now proving that it is in fact true?

PR says no to 'problem-ridden', 'costly' biometric system Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:29 AM PDT
(Harakah Daily) - Pakatan Rakyat today rejected the Election Commission's plan to introduce biometric system in the coming general election, saying the system was not only too costly, but has no check and balance as well as fraught with problems of implementation. In a joint statement signed by PAS's election director Dr Hatta Ramli, DAP International secretary Liew Chin Tong and PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli, PR however pointed out that the move, which drew instant approval from prime minister Najib Razak, had vindicated allegations of phantom voters and multiple voting. PM announces 7th NKRA - tackling rising living costs Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:59 AM PDT
By Azril Annuar, The Sun PUTRAJAYA (July 27, 2011): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak announced today the seventh National Key Result Area (NKRA) – to tackle the rising costs of living. Najib said the cabinet made the decision as the government does not want the people to suffer from the rising cost of living which has already begun affecting them. "When we first came up with the first six NKRA two years ago, there was no global phenomena on the rising cost of food items. The first six NKRA were initiated after studies were conducted on what the public wanted and needed. "Now that the phenomena on the rising costs of living have become an issue impacting the lives of everyday Malaysians, we have to respond to alleviate the burden and suffering of our people," he said, at a press conference held at his office today. Najib said the 1Malaysia clinics, the 1Malaysia chain of sundry shops and the Tukar programme will now be part of the seventh NKRA. "Pemandu's expertise will be utilised to help the various agencies and ministries involved in items, food items or services concerning the public. It will also be involved in organising labs with the ministries," he added. One of the steps to be taken by the government is to study the supply chain and look at what can be done to "liberalise" it. "Perhaps we will allow for more imported goods and items to add to the market supply. Secondly, we could also open up unused empty fields for food production. We might also find a cheaper alternative on livestock feed," he added. Najib said the newest NKRA will not only cover food items but also other necessities. The first six NKRA are: reducing crime index; poverty eradication; improving urban public transport, combating corruption, education and improving infrastructure in rural areas. Earlier, he held a dialogue session with a number of iconic figures tasked to engage the public in the 1Malaysia Online Roundtable discussion. "It was a very productive discussion. They brought up important suggestions for our consideration. We'll try to respond accordingly. They also want to be involved in the follow through process later. "One of the benefits of this discussion is that we're able to get and feel the pulse of the people," Najib said, adding certain ideas and suggestions raised might be used in the formulating of government policies. Amongst those attending the dialogue were football pundit Serbegeth Singh, celebrity host Aznil Nawawi, ISIS CEO Datuk Dr. Mahani Zainal Abidin and celebrity Lisa Surihani. On the recommendations made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry regarding the late Teoh Beng Hock's case, Najib said: "We will make operational changes to the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) in terms of the training. It's been stated that the training is inadequate and we will strengthen it. "Management of witness will adhere to a new set of guidelines and also with respect to the three who have been named in the report, it's up to MACC and police to make further investigation and the Attorney General to decide on the next course." During the discussion, Najib said he will be cheering Harimau Malaya on their grudge rematch tonight against Singapore at Dewan Wawasan in Kubang Pasu, Kedah with around 10,000 members of the public. He apologised to National Football Team Coach K. Rajagobal for not being able to make it to the game at Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil. "We have a big group here and they're listening to our conversation and they are behind you and Harimau Malaya. I'm sure you'll be able to rise to the occasion and the country is behind you all the way. "I'm sure you have some things (planned) to overcome our two goal loss," he added. |
Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:49 AM PDT By Masterwordsmith As I drove to Caring Society Complex, a light drizzle began - almost as if the heavens were silently weeping for the six civilians, Choo Chon Kai, Sarat Babu, Sarasvathy Muthu, Sukumaran A/L Munisamy, A. Letchumanan, and Dr. Jeyakumar Devaraj (MP for Sungei Siput) who were arrested under the Emergency Ordinance on July 2nd. It has been 27 tormentous days and nights not just for them, but also for their loved ones and loyal supporters. By the time I arrived, the darkness of the night was reminiscent of the solitary confinement cells. Did they know night from day? Or how long they had been there? Deep within, I knew that this candlelight vigil and forum "BERSIH 2.0 Crack-Down: "EO Another ISA" Forum"* would be different from the rest because of the impact of the BERSIH 2.0 rally. Led by Seok Hwa of Suaram, cries of "Hidup Rakyat" and "Bebaskan EO6" filled the night as the crowd grew in size. A few members from the crowd stepped forward to speak up for those in detention and also about the issue at hand - the repressive legislation enforced even though there is absolutely no emergency situation.

709 Rally - Significance and Implications Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:44 AM PDT
By Friends of SUARAM (FOS) Working Committee, Johore Despite all forms of deception, destruction and intimidation and eventually an all-out suppression by the ruling clique of the UMNO-dominated Barisan Nasional Government, 709 rally cum "walk for democracy", was successfully held in Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the heartland of Malaysia. It was a remarkable achievement resulting from a high-degree collective wisdom and correct leadership of Bersih 2.0 leaders, coupled with the extremely huge response and courageous participation of the people. The Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein deployed a large number of fully-armed FRU (riot squads) to block with barbed wire all streets leading to the Merdeka Stadium. Thousands of police were instructed to arrest people, and to disperse any public gathering of people. Only a few thousand demonstrators managed to break through the barricades and successfully entered the area surrounding Merdeka Stadium. Since a peaceful assembly could not be held in the historic and ideal venue chosen by Bersih leaders, more than 50,000 disgruntled participants had no alternative but to take to the streets. Bersihl eaders, including Ambiga and others, in defiance of the restriction order issued by the Court, entered Kuala Lumpur City Centre, braving the possibility of being prevented from entry, or of being arrested. They were eventually stopped and arrested on the way to attend the rally. The "memorandum of 8-point demand for electoral reform" could not be submitted to Agong on that day as a result of the brutal suppression by Barisan Nasional government headed by Najib, Bersih 2.0 had no choice but to appoint another date to submit the memorandum to Agong. 709 rally cum "walk for democracy" was unexpectedly turned into a public demonstration that boosted popular morale. It signified a strong demand for reform of the parliamentary election system as well as for political democracy, after a period of 54 years since Independence. It reflected the unity and co-operation among all ethnic communities, particularly the 3 major communities (Chinese, Malay and Indian). The rally can be interpreted as a severe criticism levelled at the racist blackmail and attack launched by hegemonistic UMNO ruling clique. It took place simply because of UMNO-dominated BN ruling clique stubbornly brushing aside Bersih 2.0's "8-point demand" for electoral reform, which is justified, legitimate and appropriate. The situation was aggravated by Najib going back on his own word, disallowing the rally to be held in Merdeka Stadium. Instead, he gave the green light to the police to resort to brutal repression of those taking part in the rally, including the Bersih leaders. The "709 Bersih rally" can be aptly described as a popular movement of the three ethnic communities launched for the purpose of achieving electoral reform for clean and fair elections. It was a mass struggle unprecedented in the history of Malaysia. The occurrence of this historic event followed by its development is of great significance and of far-reaching implications for democracy and human rights movement in Malaysia. The implications are as follows:- 1. The people realised the unreasonable and deceptive nature of the"rules of the game" of parliamentary elections. The "709 Bersih rally" has brought to light the following points: (1) The past 54 years of practical experience in parliamentary elections since Independence, has taught the broad masses that the "rules of the game" (i.e. election rules, election system and procedures) designed by the British government, and implemented by the UMNO-dominated Alliance and the present Barisan Nasional government are unreasonable and deceptive in nature. (2) The people, through their personal experience in life, have realised that the continuing existence and implementation of the "rules of the game" of parliamentary elections, favouring the ruling clique of the day, would never bring about a popularly-elected government, genuinely representing and protecting the interests of the people. (3) The broad masses have, through the past 54 years of untold suffering, realised that the UMNO hegemonistic ruling clique is the root cause of all racial discrimination, corruption, abuse of power, polarization of wealth and poverty, and social disharmony. The BN component parties (MCA, Gerakan, SUPP and MIC especially) are merely accomplices and lackeys of UMNO's ruling clique. They are working hand in glove against the people; (4) A large proportion of the populace have also realized that, in order to have a better life, the UMNO hegemonistic ruling clique which has ruled our country for 54 long years, must at an opportune time be booted out of the political arena. 2. Daring to put up popular struggle is the answer to the UMNO's racist blackmail It is common knowledge that the BN ruling clique never fails to engage in political blackmail with racist overtones (resorting to lame excuses to intimidate the people ) whenever the Rakyat rise on any occasion to demand justice. In September 2000, after being pressured by Suqiu (the electoral demands made by the Chinese community touching on various national issues). The then Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir decided to settle accounts with the Suqiu Committee not long after the General Election. He summoned leaders of the Suqiu Committee headed by Mr Kuek Hian Hiang of Dong Jiao Zong (the United Chinese School Committees' & Teachers' Associations) to his office. He administered threats to them, pressurizing them to back down on their demands. Meanwhile, MCA and Gerakan leaders coaxed and threatened the leaders of the Suqiu Committee and other Chinese community leaders into setting aside their demands, or risked facing racial backlash. At the same time, the UMNO Youth was stirring up racial sentiments by vowing "to burn down the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall"and shouting slogans like "the Chinese Malaysians go back to China", etc. The UMNO ruling clique headed by Dr. Mahathir practised "white terror" by way of clamouring that "Suqiu has infringed upon the Malay special privileges" and "Suqiu has caused social unrest". By resorting to such "white terror", the government succeeded in thwarting the Suqiu movement. In 1987, the current Prime Minister Najib was the UMNOYouth chief cum Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports. 1987 was the year when the government created a political turmoil when it assigned non-mandarin speaking school administrators to Chinese schools. Najib, in his capacity as the UMNO Youth chief, convened a 10,000-strong rally. A banner bearing the slogan "to soak the Malay keris in Chinese blood" ("Basahkan Keris Dengan Darah Cina") was conspicuously displayed in the rally. In the same rally, Najib delivered a speech highly charged with racist sentiments while waving a keris in his hand. He has now denied having uttered such seditious words as "to soak the Malay keris in Chinese blood" after assuming the post of prime minister (refer to the Chinese news reported by Merdeka Review at http://www.merdekareview.com/news.php?n=9969). But when Bersih 2.0 announced its intention to hold the 709 rally at the Merdeka Stadium, Najib openly supported Melaka chief minister Ali Rustam in mobilizing members of the Malay martial art organization known as PESAKA (Malaysian National Federation of Silat) to take part in the so-called "patriot" rally led by UMNOYouth on 9 July, allegedly to protect the National Palace. Ali Rustam claimed that PESAKA had a total membership of 4000,000. Najib utilized the state machinery (mainly institutions resorting to violence and mass media owned or manipulated by the government) and the racist organization PERKASA to unleash an atmosphere of "white terror" against the people of various communities, in an attempt to frighten them into distancing themselves from the Bersih movement. But such sinister plot failed miserably. The success of Bersih 2.0 rally goes to show that daring to put up popular struggle is the answer to the UMNO's racist blackmail. In the face of the determined action taken by Bersih leaders and the participants of the rally, the racist political blackmail of the UMNO ruling clique has met with total failure. 3. 709 Bersih rally fostered greater awareness as well as unity and cooperation among all ethnic communities 709 Bersih rally has been the biggest popular struggle for human rights and democracy in Malaysia for the past 54 years since Independence. It was estimated that more than 50,000 people from various ethnic groups participated in the rally (mainly the three major ethnic groups - Malays, Chinese and Indians - and other minority groups like Ibans and Kadazans). They were believers of different faiths (largely Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, etc.) and were from all walks of life (workers, farmers, petty traders, professionals, businessmen, academics, artists, political parties, retirees, etc.). The huge crowd of people from different directions, and from all nooks and corners, converged towards the direction of Merdeka Stadium in a peaceful and orderly manner. They were chanting "Hidup Bersih! Hidup Reformasi! HidupRakyat!", expressing their strong desire for reforms. Some of them were seen wearing yellow Bersih T-shirts; some had yellow Bersih 2.0 head banners; while some others were waving national flags. No one was carrying any offensive weapon and such like. Banners which were normally displayed in rallies, but they could hardly be seen in 709 Bersih rally. Those who took part in the peaceful march were however demonized by the UMNO ruling clique as a mob out to create commotions. They were crudely handled with violence by fully-armed anti-riot squads. Tear gas canisters and chemical-laced water cannons were used against them. In the crackdown, a total of 1,667 persons, including the Bersih chairperson Ambiga and several opposition leaders, were arrested, making the number of arrests a record high in history. The mass arrests drew public criticisms from all quarters. Because of that, the police were forced to release all the detainees within a day. It was indeed an embarrassment to the police force. It is to be noted that an overdose of tear gas released by the police resulted in the collapse and death of Baharuddin Ahmad, a participant of the rally. The anti-riot squad fired tear gas canisters and water cannons into the compounds of Tung Shin Hospital and Chinese Maternity Hospital. The police action was merely for the sake of giving chase to the participants who sought refuge in the hospitals. The anti-riot squad totally disregarded the safety of the patients, pregnant women as well as babies in the hospitals. Such repressive actions were immediately severely condemned by the public, and there was heated public discourse on the Internet. To allay public discontent, health minister Liow Tiong Lai convened a media conference with directors of Tung Shin Hospital. He declared that "Tung Shin Hospital and patients did not suffer any injury or damage". That was a futile attempt to justify the government's crackdown. The health minister even went to the extent of claiming that "the police were merely sending the injured to the hospital". He went further to argue that "there would not have been such untoward incident if there were no Bersih rally". All these allegations are sheer nonsense! The truth always prevails. 11 doctors (some of them were from the two hospitals concerned) issued a joint statement founded upon their personal experiences in the rally, served to rebut Liow's false allegations. Numerous articles and photos depicting police brutality were uploaded on the Net. All this constitutes irrebuttable evidence of the repressive actions taken by the government and the police force. The spirit of being fellow Malaysians prevailed in the rally. In the face of violent crackdown, participants of the rally rendered assistance and support to each other, regardless of ethnicity. They marched towards the common goal. It was an invaluable experience and educational process for the Rakyat. It laid the spiritual and material foundation for the struggle on a larger scale for human rights and democracy in the future. Therefore, 709 Bersih rally is of far-reaching implications favourable to the inter-racial unity and cooperation among thevarious communities. This is undeniable. 4. 709 Bersih rally shows NGOs the right direction tomarch forward The launching of "709 Bersih rally" cum "Walk for Democracy" eventually developed into a widespread "709 Public Demonstration". The Bersih chairperson Ambiga and its steering committee have demonstrated theiroutstanding leadership. They won the full confidence and the overwhelming support of the Rakyat. This led to the success of the rally, making it possible for us to move a step forward towards democracy in this country. Ambiga showed her exceptional quality of perseverance and courage in leading Bersih 2.0. She proved herself a shining exemplary leader in civil society. Bersih 2.0 is a coalition of 62 legitimate NGOs (also known as "civil society"). It strives for clean and fair elections. Bersih 2.0 is neither a political party nor a subsidiary of any political party. Bersih 2.0 is to carry on with its struggle for clean and fair elections. It does not exist for the purpose of winning seats in legislative assemblies or seizing power on behalf of any political party. Thus, it is neither subjugated to any political party nor taking orders from any political party. Bersih 2.0 leaders will only act in the interests of the Rakyat, relying on the consensus among civil society groups, and on the final policy decision of the steering committee. Bersih will maintain its independence and autonomy as an NGO coalition. The non-partisan stand adopted by Bersih 2.0 while acting in the interests of the people, was well-received by the people, irrespective of ethnicity, class and religion, and it was also welcomed by various political parties. Bersih 2.0 rally was subsequently turned into a "709 Public Demonstration". This is because the position taken by Bersih 2.0 was in accord with the aspirations and interests of the people regardless of ethnicity, class or creed. It also gained the support of various political parties. In brief, a number of factors contributed to the success of Bersih 2.0 rally, and therefore, the fruit of success ought to be shared and enjoyed by all and sundry. Without doubt, Bersih 2.0 has clearly defined its position, that is, to fight for "clean and fair elections". PSM (Malaysian Socialist Party) launched a 3-day political publicity campaign (from 24 to 26 June) on "Udahlah tu----Bersaralah! BN". The home ministry tried to equate such publicity campaign with Bersih 2.0's electoral reform movement. This was obviously a mischievous attempt on the part of the government to confuse the people, designed to create a wrong impression that Bersih 2.0, like PSM, was calling for "the immediate overthrow of the BN government". The home ministry, through the police, invoked the Emergency Ordinance to detain MP Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj and 5 others, accusing them of "waging war against Yang Di-Pertuan Agong" and "reviving communism", simply because of the red T-shirts bearing portraits of MCP leaders (i.e. Chin Peng and Abdullah CD) found in their bus. The whole episode is ridiculous to the extreme! The undeniable fact is: On 4 March 2005, Chin Peng, the leader of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) had, in his "10-point statement", said: "we have taken the oath of allegiance and loyalty to Yang DiPertuan Agong" "we have agreed to give up violence and armed struggle and everything". Prior to this, in 1989, MCP had laid down arms, destroyed all weapons, disbanded its armed forces, and signed the "Haadyai Peace Accord" jointly with the Malaysian government. The detention of Dr Jeyakumar and 5 other members is no doubt a heavy blow to PSM. To some extent, it has tarnished the image of Bersih 2.0. It is detrimental to Bersih's call for electoral reform. "Bersih! Bersih! Hidup Bersih!" was the unanimous slogans chanted throughout the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9, where no flag or slogan of any political party was seen. The slogans used reflected the common aspirations of the Rakyat for clean and fair elections. Rakyat have given a thumbs-up to the Bersih 2.0 rally. The Bersih 2.0 rally is a mature and successful public demonstration. To sum up, 709 rally has no doubt far-reaching implications conducive to the healthy development of civil society in this country.

RCI + inquest = ‘big, big mess’ Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:42 AM PDT
By Teoh El Sen, FMT PETALING JAYA: The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Teoh Beng Hock's death, which released its findings in a report last Thursday, has created a "big legal mess" by generating more questions than answers, said prominent human rights lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar. Malik, who represented the Selangor government during the inquest and RCI, said rather than serving its original function to bring a closure to the issue, there are now different conclusions by the RCI and inquest. "What has resulted is a big, big, mess. We have now a coroner's decision and a RCI's, which are saying different things. In law, the coroner's findings is the determinative one," the National Human Rights Society president told FMT. Malik said the three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers – Negri Sembilan MACC director (then Selangor MACC deputy director) Hishamuddin Hashim and two enforcement officers Mohd Anuar Ismail (then the investigating officer) and Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus, who are being internally investigated for allegedly driving Teoh to suicide – would most probably make the same argument (that the RCI finding is inferior to a court finding) if they were brought to court. "Both findings (RCI and inquest) are inconsistent. The inquest ruled out a suicide and said there were insufficient evidence to come to a finding of homicide. It also accepted that there were pre-fall injuries on Teoh, but the RCI totally ignored all that," said Malik. Malik said before the Selangor government and lawyers of Teoh's family decided to pull out of the RCI, they suggested and raised concerns over the "dual" findings that would eventually emerge but their arguments fell on deaf ears. "The RCI then should have stood down until the outcome of the revision (on the inquest) had been done away with. Or, the Attorney-General should have withdrawn his application to revise the inquest decision to push for a suicide finding and all parties to start off on a clean slate. But that was never decided on," he said. "At the end of the day, the A-G, who recommended for both a revision and most probably also advised the government to hold the RCI, was asking for two different sides," he said. "Also, the RCI decided to ignore all the evidence in the inquest and reboot the whole case… and it seems that somehow everyone got a second chance to restate their case. They (the commissioners) should not have done that; (RCI chairman) James ( Foong) could have found a way to include the coroner's findings," he added. 'There's no certainty' Malik expressed his disappointment that the RCI now gave rise to more uncertainty than definitive answers. "Where do things stand right now? There's no certainty. What we have now is a whole mess of uncertainty," he said. "Has the RCI served its function? From the very beginning, the decision not to hold a RCI before an inquest was ill-conceived, and having a RCI as a knee-jerk reaction to public anger was also not well-thought out," he said, adding that the original intention of having a RCI was because of public anger and lack of confidence in the inquest's findings. "The RCI was more of a political resolution rather than a legal one," he said.

BN MPs want more funds ahead of polls Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:38 AM PDT
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers have told coalition leaders that the government must ensure more funds trickle down to their constituencies instead of concentrating on big-ticket projects like the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) construction in Kuala Lumpur if the ruling coalition wants to receive a strong mandate in the next general election. The Malaysian Insider understands that the matter was raised during a meeting on Monday night between 100 BN federal lawmakers and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The lawmakers argued that if Putrajaya could set aside funds for the MRT project, a similar amount should be given to generate economic benefits in more constituencies. While the BN representatives said they "understood" the purpose of the MRT project, some of them felt that development projects within "rural" constituencies should be given top priority. MPs who attended the briefing told The Malaysian Insider that many had voiced out concerns that further announcements and implementation of "mega" projects would pose a financial constraint in funding to constituencies. It is understood that some BN leaders present at the meeting had requested an extra RM1 million in allocation of funds on top of the estimated RM1 million usually allocated annually and signed by the district officer of a particular constituency. "There was a general feeling that it (MRT project) is costly, and that the money could be used for the time being for constituencies for smaller projects. One MP needs millions to do a project in his or her constituency," a BN source told The Malaysian Insider. There is controversy over the estimated cost of the MRT project, which some reports have pegged to be as high as RM50 billion, although the authorities have said the cost cannot be finalised until the MRT alignment is confirmed. But Umno MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan stressed that while BN MPs were very frank with their suggestions during the meeting, none of them voiced out any disagreement with the MRT project. "Everyone present that evening understood what the MRT was for; questions and points were just raised to strengthen arguments to allow more allocation... it's only as far as MPs who serve in rural areas feel that development projects in their own areas should have been given priority. They were quite frank in giving their input. "It was not about objection towards MRT, it was about more about wanting more funds to spend on a constituency. They are just saying that the money could have instead been used in rural areas, but the government has a different view about the economy," he told The Malaysian Insider.

But we failed to take into consideration one very important point. And this one very important point is Dr Mahathir is a more seasoned politician than we gave him credit for. And the script for the final scenario was written by him: his puppet Najib became Prime Minister instead of Ku Li who wanted then to be 'independent', reform the government, and offer the opposition a role in the government under a Unity Government. THE CORRIDORS OF POWER Raja Petra Kamarudin
To sack Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah from Umno is to precipitate the party's own implosion. Mohd Ariff Sabri Aziz, Free Malaysia Today Why is Umno quiet about Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and his Amanah? The answer is that they simply can't do anything about it. Even among Umno members there is increasing disquiet about how things are managed. Saifuddin Abdullah's recent 'out-of-line' statements and Khairy Jamaluddin's conscientious objections are only tips of the icebergs. Tengku Razaleigh is merely pointing out the realities. He is still an Umno member – so what can Umno do at the moment? Umno can't sack a person of his stature without precipitating its own implosion. So go ahead- sack him and it will make the days of many. Tengku Razaleigh is of course mindful of the possible repercussions of his actions. He may not be fielded as an Umno candidate in the next elections. He may lose the support of Gua Musang Umno. Current Umno leaders inconsequential The last time I spoke to him, he was telling me of these reservations. I pointed out to him that his victory doesn't just depend on Umno votes. It depends on the rakyat. Given the history of seeing only 60 % of Umno members voting for their own candidates and 60 % of Malays voting for non-Umno candidates in the last general election, I would rate his chances as being above average. The opinion of the present Umno leadership is quite simply inconsequential. So that is why Umno is quiet about the whole thing. At the moment this is what Amanah provides. Amanah provides platform for speaking out against the abuses on the Merdeka heritage. READ MORE HERE: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/2011/07/27/umno-cant-risk-sacking-ku-li/ **************************************** What I am about to say is in response to the article above. It is not something new but what I have said many times in the past. In fact, in my more than one hour interview with TV3 in Perth, I touched on this issue. Unfortunately, TV3 was not 'brave' enough to air that part of my interview. First of all, because of the way Malaysian elections are conducted, even if Barisan Nasional garners just 45% of the popular votes it will still be able to form the federal government. This is the reality of the situation and this is why we need BERSIH -- to reform the electoral system to change this state of affairs. For Pakatan Rakyat to be able to form the federal government it would need to garner at least 60% of the popular votes. And this is almost impossible if we do not reform the system. Maybe 50% of the popular votes would be possible. But 50% would not give Pakatan Rakyat the federal government. It has to be at least 60%. This means, short of a massive revamp of the system, it would be impossible for Pakatan Rakyat to form the federal government. And this means we may need to look at Barisan Nasional for the next Malaysian Prime Minister (unless Pakatan Rakyat can do the 'impossible' and garner 60% of the popular votes). Let's be very clear about one thing. I would love to see the Prime Minister come from Pakatan Rakyat. Whether this 'someone' from Pakatan Rakyat is Anwar Ibrahim or Nizar Jamaluddin or Lim Guan Eng or whoever is secondary at the moment. This is not the issue we need to discuss just yet. The issue is, for the meantime, who from Barisan Nasional should be the Prime Minister. And that was why six years ago back in 2006 we looked at the possibility that this someone from Barisan Nasional, which therefore also meant someone from Umno, has to be someone who is prepared to embark upon a reform agenda. And this someone, due to lack of any other more suitable alternative, would have to be Tengku Tan Sri Razaleigh Hamzah a.k.a. Ku Li. And with that in mind, bloggers, political activists, and civil society members from both sides of the political divide got together to see how Abdullah Ahmad Badawi a.k.a. Pak Lah could be ousted and replaced with Ku Li. Meeting after meeting was held. Ex-Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was also approached and a few meetings were held with him as well. And it was agreed that Pak Lah would be ousted and Ku Li would replace him. But there was one condition that Dr Mahathir stipulated and which Ku Li could not agree to. And that one condition was: once Pak Lah is ousted and Ku Li takes over, a Presidential Council would be formed and the new Prime Minister would be 'guided' by this Council. This is just like how the nine Rulers rule, through state Royal Councils. But this Presidential Council would be slightly different. It would be a de facto Prime Minister Council. Ku Li, of course, did not agree to this and so Dr Mahathir decided to back Najib Tun Razak instead. Najib agreed to become the rubber-stamp Prime Minister with the Presidential Council as the de facto Prime Minister. The question would be: who will head this Presidential Council -- basically the de facto Prime Minister? And the answer is: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. This, in short, meant that Dr Mahathir would become the de facto Prime Minister while Pak Lah's successor would be just a rubber-stamp Prime Minister. Then, along came the number two of the Special Branch of the Military Intelligence, Kol Azmi Zainal Abidin, who claimed he had documentary evidence that Rosmah Mansor and her ADC (and husband) were at the scene of Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder. This most damaging report would thus disqualify Najib and would put Ku Li back in the lead. The day after I signed my Statutory Declaration, Dr Mahathir summoned Tan Sri Sanusi Junid to his office and asked him whether he had read my SD. Sanusi at first did not know what Dr Mahathir was talking about. After Sanusi had read my SD, Dr Mahathir retorted, "Raja Petra has just killed our horse. We need to find a new one." However, before the final nail could be hammered into Najib's coffin, Kol Azmi did a U-turn and claimed that all the evidence had been removed from the Military Intelligence office and had been destroyed. He also claimed that no copies were made. Instead of hammering the final nail into Najib's coffin, it was hammered into my coffin and Najib went on to become the new Prime Minister while Ku Li was shafted in the arse (along with me of course). Is Ku Li going to be a better Prime Minister? That is what many may ask. The question should be whether Ku Li would be a better Prime Minister than Najib. And whether with Ku Li as Prime Minister, we would have a problem of a Rosmah Mansor acting like Queen Marie Antoinette of France. And whether with Ku Li as Prime Minister we would have a de facto Prime Minister calling the shots and playing the role of the real power behind the throne. Ku Li made one thing very clear, which unsettled Dr Mahathir like hell. And that one thing is: he would become an 'independent' Prime Minister who would press for reforms and even consider forming a 'Unity Government' with the opposition. On the basis of these three promises, we decided to back Ku Li as the new Barisan Nasional (Umno) Prime Minister. This was back in 2006, two years before the March 2008 general election and one year before the November 2007 BERSIH rally. No one knew then how the opposition was going to perform in the following general election due in 2008 or 2009. In fact, at that time, there was no Pakatan Rakyat. Pakatan Rakyat had not even been formed yet. And DAP was still an 'independent' opposition party and not part of any opposition coalition. So, our only bet then, in the absence of a strong and viable opposition coalition, was to try to influence changes within Umno and back the best man who could become Prime Minister and bring reforms to Malaysia. I stress, this was back in 2006, five years ago. And back then this appeared to be the best alternative. |

REF: KUALA LUMPUR 787
Classified By: Political Section Chief Mark D. Clark for reasons 1.4 (b and d).
SUMMARY 1. (C) Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has seen his political position eroded during a tumultuous week of mounting challenges from within his United Malay National Organization (UMNO), his coalition partners, and the opposition. While struggling to regain cohesion within his National Front (BN) coalition in the face of inter-racial tensions, UMNO leaders have raised new questions over Abdullah's 2010 transition to his deputy Najib Tun Razak, creating fresh doubts that Abdullah can gain his party's reelection in December. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim dispatched his lieutenants to Taiwan with the avowed aim to complete talks with BN members of Parliament who would crossover to bring down Abdullah's government. At the same time, the Opposition alliance stated the September 16 deadline to topple the government could slip. The chief of the armed forces clarified that the military would remain apolitical, but could be called out via proper legal channels to assist with internal security. Abdullah emerged from an UMNO meeting to state that the government could use the Internal Security Act (ISA), and its detention without trial provisions, to preserve internal security; on September 12 the government made good on this threat by detaining controversial blogger Raja Petra. End Summary. RACIST COMMENTS PROMPT UMNO LEADERS MEETING 2. (SBU) To quell growing animosity and tension between UMNO and its ethnic Chinese partners in the National Front coalition resulting from caustic racist comments from Penang UMNO division leader Ahmad Ismail, PM Abdullah was forced to hold a meeting of the BN Supreme Council on September 9 and a gathering of the UMNO Supreme Council on September 10. The BN leaders referred the matter to UMNO to take action against its own member. After a three hour meeting, the UMNO Supreme Council decided to suspend Ahmad from the party for three years, stripping him of all of his official duties. Despite this ruling, Ahmad remained defiant and suggested his Penang division quickly would create a new role for him. Some of Abdullah's detractors in the party, like Selangor warlord Khir Toyo, came to Ahmad's defense. The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and the Chinese-dominated Gerakan party voiced their appreciation for UMNO's decision, but also called for a stop to further racially incendiary remarks. 2010 TRANSITION UNRAVELING? 3. (C) As Abdullah and UMNO attempted to douse heated racial tensions that damaged the BN coalition, this week also witnessed the fraying of UMNO's acquiescence to Abdullah's plan to hand over power to DPM Najib in 2010. The most direct blow came from International Trade and Industry Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, an UMNO Vice President who is considered a potential candidate for Deputy Prime Minister should Abdullah step down. Muhyiddin stated on September 10 that Abdullah should resign well before the June 2010 transition date. Muhyiddin noted that the initial promise of this two-month old proposal, meant to assuage concerns about Abdullah's sagging popularity and party support, had now "sunk away". Reacting during a televised press encounter, Abdullah was visibly angered by Muhyiddin's comment. Abdullah questioned why Muhyiddin would challenge the transition plan when the UMNO Supreme Council had already approved the transition and its timing. On September 12, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak appeared to contradict Abdullah and shift his position away from Abdullah's deal, stating that delegates at the December UMNO party elections should approve the transition and its timetable. Other important UMNO leaders have revived their calls to eliminate high quotas for the number of nominations needed to contest leadership positions in the party polls, a system which now heavily favors Abdullah. MAHATHIR SEEKS RETURN TO UMNO 4. (SBU) Complicating matters further for Abdullah, former PM and former UMNO President Mahathir, who quit UMNO on May 19 after expressing disgust with Abdullah's leadership, is considering returning to the party. A smiling UMNO Vice President Muhyiddin told reporters September 9 that Mahathir was persuaded by him, Tengku Razaleigh and several other veteran UMNO leaders at a private meeting at Mahathir's residence on September 6 to rejoin UMNO to help "fix the problems" afflicting the party. Foreign Minister and senior UMNO official Rais Yatim later joined other party leaders in welcoming Mahathir's proposed return to the fold. Mahathir reportedly is now backing his former nemesis, Tengku Razaleigh, to unseat Abdullah in the December UMNO party elections. Commenting tersely on the possible return of Mahathir, whose harsh criticisms of the Prime Minister continue unabated, Abdullah stated September 11 that the UMNO Supreme Council will decide on the issue as "this is a party matter." THE OPPOSITION ATTEMPTS TO COUNTER TAIWAN PLOY... 5. (SBU) Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim meanwhile sought to keep the pressure on UMNO and BN by dispatching four senior officials from this Peoples Justice Party's (PKR) to Taiwan, supposedly to meet with BN MP's who may crossover to bring down Abdullah's government. BN had hastily arranged a "study tour" to Taiwan for BN members of Parliament, September 8-17, in what is widely viewed as a ploy to thwart September 16 crossovers. PKR said their officials would attempt to finalize the crossovers (the opposition requires 30 to claim the majority and topple Abdullah's government). OPPOSITION ADMITS SEPTEMBER 16 COULD SLIP 6. (SBU) As PKR announced its officials were going to Taiwan to finalize crossovers, the opposition People's Alliance (Pakatan) also issued a statement suggesting that the September 16 deadline for toppling BN could slip. The three-party alliance of PKR, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), in a September 11 release, explained that the September 16 deadline may have to be postponed due to the Taiwan trip by the BN MPs. However, the coalition expressed confidence that a change of federal government "would happen soon." Subsequently, BN officials announced that many of the MPs would be returning early from Taiwan, hinting that this should eliminate excuses for Anwar not meeting his September 16 deadline. ARMED FORCES TO STAY OUT OF POLITICS, BUT STILL ON CALL 7. (SBU) Malaysian Armed Forces Chief General Abdul Aziz Zainal stated at a press conference September 11 that the armed forces have been and will remain apolitical. The General gave his assurance following questions and criticism from opposition and civil society quarters over his statement on September 9, urging the government to take stern action against anyone stoking racial sentiments in the country and thereby threatening national unity. "The armed forces are highly professional and apolitical", Abdul Aziz clarified on September 11, and would only get involved in internal matters if requested through the legal process by the authorities or police. He explained, "Our (the military's) secondary role is to support the police and government agencies in any form of operations where our presence is requested -- such as for internal security, humanitarian and disaster relief operations.8 General Abdul Aziz refused to comment when asked by reporters whether he would support a new government, adding "I do not know of any (impending) changes in government." ABDULLAH THREATENS USE OF THE INTERNAL SECURITY ACT 8. (SBU) PM Abdullah stated September 10, following the UMNO Supreme Council meeting, that he did not rule out the possibility of invoking the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows detention without trial for those who threaten national security. He added that the Home Minister, who has the authority to approve ISA detentions, would "think twice or even three times" before deciding to take that step, but "if the minister thinks that it is an appropriate action to be taken, then he will take it." 9. (SBU) The Prime Minister said that in the September 10 Cabinet meeting, his Ministers expressed concern and described race relations in the country as showing "not so good signs," and that a number of sensitive issues which were not openly discussed before were being raised. Although the government has managed to control the situation thus far, he added that "we cannot allow a fiery situation to prevail as it could jeopardize the peace and security of our country." Responding to a question on whether the government would curtail freedom of speech in the country, the PM explained that there was no such thing as absolute freedom anywhere in the world, noting "People cannot just say whatever they like, in the name of free speech, to the extend that it can offend and hurt others and jeopardize security." MAKING GOOD ON THE THREAT 10. (SBU) Abdullah's government made good on the threat by arresting controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin at his home on September 12, using the ISA. Home Minister Syed Hamid confirmed to reporters that police had detained Raja Petra under the ISA provision for persons who pose threats to "security, peace and public order." Raja Petra has repeatedly enraged the BN government by, among other things, blunting attacking senior political leaders, connecting DPM Najib to a murder scandal, and condemning the sodomy allegations against Anwar. Raja Petra currently faces sedition and defamation charges. Septel provides more details of the arrest and provides suggested press guidance. COMMENT 11. (C) Abdullah has endured a rough week, one that has eroded his political strength. The current tone of the direct and indirect challenges to his position are similar to those he faced in the first six weeks after the March 8 election debacle when his continuation in office was an open question. Two factors are increasing the pressure on Abdullah at this point. First, UMNO has become unnerved in the face of Anwar Ibrahim's threat to bring down the government this month, and the greater Anwar's menace, the more UMNO elites consider replacing Abdullah with a stronger figure. Second, the UMNO divisional elections, which select delegates to the December party polls, begin on October 9 almost immediately following the Muslim holidays at the end of the Muslim fasting month. Those leaders who wish to challenge Abdullah's reelection and his two-year transition to Najib must stake out their positions now and maneuver for support, or the opportunity quickly will be lost. Yes, in Mekah and Medina there is no banned sect of Islam. In Mekah and Medina everyone is just plain Muslim and we are allowed to pray side-by-side with them and behind imams who are Salafis or Wahhabis. But when we come back to Malaysia, we ban them, arrest them and declare that they are deviant Muslims and terrorists whom Malaysians must not follow. NO HOLDS BARRED Malaysia appears to have many enemies of the state. The colour yellow. Words such as 'Reformasi', 'Hindraf', 'Bersih', 'Altantuya', etc. Shiah and anything at all within the scope of non-Sunni Islam. Communists. Jews. Gays. Democracy. Gatherings. Marches. Rallies. Free speech. Bahasa Malaysia Bibles. Proportional representation in Parliament and the State Assemblies. Opposition political parties. You name it and they are all enemies of the state as far as Malaysia is concerned. The Malaysian government is scared of its own shadow. And now Wahhabism is the latest addition to the list of 'banned items'. The article 'The Wahhabi Myth' addresses the fallacies connected to Wahhabism or Salafism as follows: The 'Wahhabi' Myth by Haneef James Oliver clarifies many of the gross inaccuracies and outright lies that have been attributed to the belief of the Salafi Muslims (often referred to as "Wahhabis"). Karen Armstrong speaks about the difference between Osama bin Laden's sect (Qutbism) and Salafism/"Wahhabism" in a Guardian article entitled "The label of Catholic terror was never used about the IRA": "Bin Laden was not inspired by Wahhabism but by the writings of the Egyptian ideologue Sayyid Qutb, who was executed by President Nasser in 1966. Almost every fundamentalist movement in Sunni Islam has been strongly influenced by Qutb, so there is a good case for calling the violence that some of his followers commit "Qutbian terrorism." Qutb urged his followers to withdraw from the moral and spiritual barbarism of modern society and fight it to the death. Read more here: http://sinningslave.wordpress.com/ The bottom line is, anything that does not comply with my beliefs, standards, ideology, doctrine and whatnot is just not on and is haram. That was how things were back in the Middle Ages. Either you are with me or you are against me. And if you are against me then you are my enemy and you must die a violent and painful death. The problem is, while the civilised world has abandoned these old Middle Ages ways and beliefs, in the developing world -- such as in Malaysia -- we are still living in the Middle Ages and still adopting what the civilised world has long abandoned. In short, as the previous Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said: Malaysia is a country with First World infrastructure but Third World mentality. And this statement came from the Malaysian Prime Minister himself. And do you need me to quote what one-time Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said about the mentality of Malaysians? No, I thought not. I better not quote anything from Dr Mahathir lest you all froth and foam at the mouth like rabid dogs. Tens of thousands of Malaysians go to Mekah and Medina every year for their Haj and Umrah. To date, millions of Malaysians have performed both the main and 'small' pilgrimages. And what do they do in Mekah and Medina? They pray side-by-side with the Shiah, Wahhabi, and many other sects of Muslims -- behind an imam of the Grand Mosque in Mekah and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina who are Salafis or Wahhabis. Yes, in Mekah and Medina there is no banned sect of Islam. In Mekah and Medina everyone is just plain Muslim and we are allowed to pray side-by-side with them and behind imams who are Salafis or Wahhabis. But when we come back to Malaysia we ban them and arrest them and declare that they are deviant Muslims and terrorists whom Malaysians must not follow. I watched a movie last night about a gang of robbers that the FBI was trying to track down. They had some suspects but could not get a warrant to put them under 24-hours surveillance. It would be very difficult to convince the court, said the FBI boss, unless one of them converts to Islam. What does that tell you? It tells you that Islam is dangerous and Muslims are terrorists. If one of the bank robbers were a Muslim then the court would readily waive his fundamental rights. That is of course a made-in-America movie where anything Islam is bad and Muslims are terrorists. I suppose they are not that wrong when even the Malaysian government labels Wahhabis or Salafis as terrorists. And is not Malaysia a perceived Islamic country and did not Umno say it is the largest Islamic party in the world? When the Christians and Jews call Muslims terrorists, they are prejudiced. When Muslims call Muslims terrorists, this is a statement of fact and proves what the West suspected of Islam -- that it is a terrorist religion. And did I not say many times that Muslims are Islam's greatest enemy? ************************************ Wahhabi alert will damage ties with Saudi Arabia, says PAS By Shannon Teoh, Malaysian Insider PAS said today that Putrajaya was damaging ties with key Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia, home of the religion's two holy cities of Mecca and Medina, by placing ulamas suspected of practicing Wahhabism on a terror watchlist. PAS vice president Datuk Mahfuz Omar told reporters today that the move by the National Security Council (NSC) to monitor scholars such as influential former Perlis mufti Asri Zainul Abidin was an overreaction that could jeopardise ties with the country where Wahhabism is the dominant form of Islam. "This will hurt ties with Saudi Arabia and give a negative perception towards Malaysia," the Pokok Sena MP said. About 26,000 Malaysian Muslims travel annually to perform the Haj in Mecca, one of the largest national quotas given by the kingdom. Malaysia has asked for another 10,000 places as nearly 700,000 are on the waiting list. Deputy president Mohamed Sabu also mocked the Najib administration's move, calling it a "fiction and propaganda." The Malaysian Insider reported yesterday that the NSC met and ordered state muftis and religious agencies to monitor and take action against the traditionalist Islamic practice that has been linked to terrorism. Maverick scholar Asri was first linked to Wahhabism and the terrorists group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) early last year, along with PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, former Perlis mentri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim dan Perlis Mufti Juanda Jaya. The Malaysian Insider understands that Abdul Hadi and Shahidam Kassim have been omitted from the watchlist. Two Umno lawmakers have come to the defense of Dr Mohamed Asri Zainul Abidin, insisting that the Najib administration has wrongly labelled the maverick former Perlis mufti as a potential terrorist threat. Both Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said that the NSC had overreacted over a difference of opinion by raising a terror alert over fears that Wahhabism was being revived. *********************************** Asri not a terrorist, say Umno MPs By Shannon Teoh, Malaysian Insider Two Umno lawmakers have come to the defence of Dr Mohamed Asri Zainul Abidin, insisting that the Najib administration has wrongly labelled the maverick former Perlis mufti as a potential terrorist threat. "Asri is not a terrorist," Saifuddin said on micro-blogging site Twitter yesterday. The Temerloh MP told The Malaysian Insider later that "I disagree with labelling someone as a Wahhabi, leading to calling him a terrorist. This only divides Muslims." Khairy also said in a statement that reports that Asri and other Muslim scholars have been placed on a watchlist for as "Wahhabis and terrorists... is an overreaction." "I see no subversive action or effort by Asri that qualifies him as a terrorist," the Rembau MP added. The Malaysian Insider also reported that the NSC meeting listed several prominent leaders as Wahhabis including a group of young Islamic scholars who joined Umno last year. Although he did not follow suit in joining the senior partner in the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, Asri, who has been linked to Wahhabism in the past, is said to wield considerable influence over young Muslim scholars. Saifuddin also told The Malaysian Insider that Wahhabism was practiced in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. "Does this mean that Malaysian Muslims should no longer perform the Haj (in Mecca)? We can have differences of opinion in Islam. We should not let this bring us to labelling others as Wahhabi or terrorists," he said in a text message. Khairy also agreed that it was unacceptable that someone was accused of terrorism without being allowed to offer an explanation. I sometimes wonder whether this is genuine stupidity or whether Jho Low is a Trojan horse who is doing all this very cleverly and intentionally to accelerate Najib's downfall. Why allow Najib's enemies easy access to ammunition? Jho Low seems to be offering Rosmah's and Najib's head to their enemies on a silver platter. NO HOLDS BARRED "Jho Low pays record price for NY condo, nearby to Rosmah's favourite jeweller," said Wong Choon Mei of Malaysia Chronicle on 21 July 2011. In that story she goes on to say: Remember Jho Low? Yes, apart from Paris Hilton, whizz-kid Jho is also very close to Prime Minister Najib Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor. In fact, the 29-year old Penang boy has just bought a super-luxury penthouse in New York at a sky-high price that has set tongues wagging amongst the property agents there. Incidentally, the condo is just a 10-minute walk from Rosmah's favourite jewellery retailer Jacob & Co, from whom she has been reported to have bought a RM24.4 million ($8 million) 'natural fancy blue-gray cushion-cut' diamond ring. And in case Rosmah, who is not known to be fond of exercise, prefers to be driven, Jacob & Co at 48, East 57th Street is just a 3-minute whizz away by stretch limousine. Business ties Jho is also connected in some way - directly or indirectly - with several very important investment and financial entities. These include Najib's prized RM15 billion 1Malaysia Development Berhad, the RM10 billion Terengganu Investment Authority, UBG which is the former banking arm of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud's family business, as well as the oil-rich Mid-East firm PetroSaudi. No, this is not a business article to unravel the amount of filth contained within the dealings of this nest of firms. Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said it best when he described 1MDB as Najib's political "slush fund" to prop up Taib and his cronies. Some in the financial circles even say the complex paper trail that surrounds the firms' inter-dealings would surely provide an ideal way to launder some of the possibly illicit money that may flow through the network. Read more here: http://www.malaysia-chronicle.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=16215:remember-jho-low?-this-is-what-he-has-been-doing-lately&Itemid=2 ************************************** What makes this revelation even more interesting are the four links Malaysia Chronicle added below that story under the sub-heading of 'Related Story': 1. Who is he? M'sian billionaire splashes RM14.5bil on super-yacht 2. The Rosmah ring: 24mil RM or US$, tupperware party or VVIP exhibition 3. Rosmah in hot soup over gargantuan RM24.4mil diamond ring 4. VIDEO Rosmah's RM24.4mil diamond ring Wong Choon Mei is known to be closely linked to PKR leader, Tian Chua. It seems as though Malaysia Chronicle is suggesting that Jho Low, who is in turn closely linked to 'First Lady' Rosmah Mansor, is not only the man behind the purchase of the most expensive yacht in history but is also the man who couriered that very controversial ring to Malaysia. According to the whispers in Putrajaya, Jho Low sent the ring to Malaysia for Rosmah to look at and whether it has now been sent back to New York, as alleged, or is still in Malaysia, is not known. And, if it has been sent back to New York, whether this is because Rosmah did not like it or whether it is because of the controversy surrounding this ring -- and therefore it is too hot to allow it to remain in Malaysia -- is also not known. Whatever it may be, Jho Low's name seems to be linked to not only the purchase of this very expensive super-luxury New York penthouse but also to the yacht and the ring. Anyway, that is what they say and we only go by what they say, whether this is true or not. But what we do know, and this is a fact, the 3M team of Mahathir-Muhyddin-Mukhriz are going to town on this issue. Jho Low is close to those who walk in the corridors of power, in particular the 'First Family of Malaysia'. And anything he does will always be linked back to the 'First Family'. There is no avoiding this. Is Jho Low just too stupid? Does he not know that he is under close scrutiny and anything he does will lead back to Rosmah's and Najib's door? And do Rosmah and Najib not know that the 3M team is gleefully awaiting his downfall so that a new 'First Family' can be installed in Putrajaya? When Najib cancelled his one-week holiday in Europe and rushed back to Malaysia after meeting the Pope in Rome (and which Najib publicly thanked Rosmah for her 'sacrifice') we already smelled a rat, a big smelly rat. Why would Najib cancel his holiday and rush back to Malaysia unless there was some sort of major emergency? And an emergency this serious can only mean his throne is under threat. And, lo and behold, when Malaysia Chronicle came out with this story of the super-luxury penthouse in New York and linked this story to the story of the yacht and Rosmah's ring, the whole thing became very clear. We are probably seeing history repeating itself here. Back in the days of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi they used Khairy Jamaluddin as the catalyst to bring Pak Lah down. Now, the catalyst is Rosmah Mansor. And Jho Low's stupidity is making this possible. Why are Jho Low and Rosmah making it so easy for the 3M team to make their move? I would have thought that since Jho Low is now so high profile and everything he does makes the front page he would not want to do anything that attracts so much attention. And buying the most expensive yacht in history and a super-luxury penthouse in New York, plus sending a very expensive ring to Rosmah by courier, is certainly the height of stupidity. The Umno blogs are working overtime to dispel talk that Rosmah bought that ring. This is actually true and the Umno blogs are not lying. Rosmah did not buy the ring. Jho Low sent it to her. But why send the ring to Rosmah by courier? Surely a ring that expensive can be sent to Malaysia through other means and in secrecy. This is probably the most stupid thing Jho Low has ever done (if it was stupidity in the first place and not done on purpose). And with the story of that ring linked to the story of the record-breaking yacht and the super-luxury penthouse in New York, just doors away from the jewellers, the 3M team has everything it now needs to start working on an early retirement for Najib. No wonder Najib had to cancel his holiday and rush back to Malaysia. Najib probably thought it would be safer to reclaim his throne before he finds it in someone else's hands. And we do not need to be a Harvard graduate to figure out who this someone else is.
