Tegur Pemimpin Hak Rakyat Jelata

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:24 PM PDT

Dulu kita jaga tepi kain orang.

Pengarang lantikan Anwar amat berkuasa.

Maka saya pun meletakkan jawatan.

Censored: KDN blacks out the Economist

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 01:11 PM PDT

ENEMIES OF PRESS FREEDOM
  • Umno-Barisan Nasional politicians
  • Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN)
  • KDN Publications and Quranic Text Control Unit
  • The Malaysian police farce
  • The Malaysian civil service
  • Tear gas man dies
    Police brutality
    Stadium swindle
    Tung Shin tear gas

Readers were not permitted to read that:

    • One man died of a heart attack after tear gas
    • The march was banned, but a stadium was offered then withdrawn
    • Police were heavy-handed, provoking anger
    • An inquiry into police brutality was conceded by the government
    • Video showed tear gas and water cannon at Tung Shin maternity hospital

The full article is available intact at the Economist's web site. (The KDN's arm doesn't reach that far.)

KDN's censorship was of publicly-available facts, backed up by other published accounts and eye-witness reports available online. It is difficult to understand the kind of thinking that will not allow the sophisticated reader of the Economist — which presents itself as the newspaper of people at the top — to read what they already know or have read elsewhere.

But the small minds of policemen and censors are more concerned with looking good than with being good.

The black marker ink of censorship often appeared on foreign magazines such as the Far Eastern Economic Review, Time, Newsweek and Life most frequently during the 1980s and 1990s especially on photographs of scantily-dressed women — broad brush strokes of marker ink was splashed across the breasts, waists or hips. Even reproductions of classical nude paintings were censored this way.

Voter registration - I see dead people (dwi-bahasa)

    Posted: 18 Jul 2011 11:33 AM PDT

I confess I do write this piece somewhat influenced by the trust issue I have with the notion that the Election Commission is totally impartial and beyond reproach.

Political parties bring in the most but 40% are ineligibleBy SHAHANAAZ HABIB and RASHVINJEET S. BEDI
    sunday@thestar.com.my

PUTRAJAYA: Voter registration numbers have gone up significantly, thanks to efforts by political parties.

But some 40% of the new voters they have registered turned out to be ineligible.

"Some are dead, underage or already registered voters," said Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

    ===================================================================================

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof has disclosed that 40% of the registered voters have been rejected and also the biggest contributors of new voters are political parties.

40% wastage rate is too excessive. Go ask any factory supervisor who is worth his salt. And among the reasons for rejection include dead people and underage persons. Now that is taking "I see dead people" statement a bit too far.

It is difficult to imagine honest and reasonable registers failed to see the dead and the infant in front of him.

Interestingly, he did not disclose from which source the majority of the rejected registration originated from.

Did Abdul Aziz mention the rejection rate among the political parties? No he didn't and given that political parties are the chief contributors and in the light of transparency and accountability, he should. In fact, the EC should return the rejection forms to the respective originators with good reasons for subsequent follow up. It could be honest mistake and to the cost of genuine eligible voters.

When I went round assisting to register voters, a genuine Malaysian in his 20s told me that he registered himself 2 years ago and until today, his name never appeared in the voter's roll. I doubled checked and confirmed that this was the case and resubmitted his registration form.

From this single incident, I am skeptical that if the abovementioned 40% rejection rate does not include instances like the above gentlemen?

IS BN BEHAVING LIKE OCCUPATION ARMY??? PICTORIAL COMPARISON!!!

    Posted: 18 Jul 2011 11:22 AM PDT

In the run up to the now historical BERSIH 2.0 rally calling for free and fair elections, the BN government did many things to scare Malaysian into staying away from the rally. The government's threat to its own citizens reached the apex of incredulity during a joint exercise between Federal Reserve Unit and Royal Malay Regiment on July 6th, three days before the BERSIH rally were to take place. Malaysiakini headlined its report "Army's simulation exercise: Disperse, or we'll shoot" on July 6th here: http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/169088

The authorities issued threats against those intending to participate in BERSIH 2.0 rally by showcasing the kind punishment meted out to those violating the ban on 'illegal' rallies. Among the banners held up during the exercise the most conspicuous one reads:'BERSURAILAH KAMU KALAU TIDAK KAMI TEMBAK' ('Disperse. If not, we'll shoot')
Translations of the stern message in Tamil and Chinese were repeated along with a transliteration in the 'Jawi' script is repeated in the banner as shown in the picture below:

The notion of security forces of a democratic government threatening to shoot the general public for participating in a peaceful rally is beyond comprehension, unless of course if it's a threat from an occupational army as the image below shows. (Click on the image below)

Tales from a Not So Action-Packed BERSIH 2.0

    Posted: 18 Jul 2011 11:05 AM PDT

It all started when Kevin found a facebook page called 'Bersih 2.0 Australia' and read about the planned rallies in Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. Unfortunately, there was none planned for Perth.

But he did notice a comment on the page - someone else from Perth was asking if there was going to be one in Perth. Kevin responded to his comment, and asked if anyone else was interested. Then another commenter from Perth turned up... and another and another and another... soon, it all became a reality, thanks to Soon Yee Yap (the original commenter), and Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia Australia!

A day before the event, more than 200 had confirmed their participation on the Bersih 2.0 Perth facebook page!

With all that was happening back home in Malaysia, how could we not stand in solidarity with our fellow Malaysians whom we knew would be facing arrests, water cannons, tear gas, and possibly even violence from silat people, patriot, perkasa and many others who opposed them?

We took a bus to the city, and Kevin hopped off near the Malaysian consulate where the rally was being held. Agnes and Jacynth went instead to the Hay Street mall (under strict orders from Kevin, just in case anything happened...), where they walked around as they waited. Agnes and Jacynth (albeit underneath her jacket!), of course, showed their support by wearing yellow!

Having been a part of the Bersih 1.0 rally in 2007 at the Masjid Jamek area (where water cannons and tear gas were also fired), Kevin couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between both rallies. We all know what happened in Malaysia in 2007, and even worse, what happened in Bersih 2.0 this year in KL. But here in Perth, it was like a street party! There was music, balloons, etc.

The police here also set up make-shift roadblocks, but only to protect the participants from oncoming traffic! Yes, we did get a little bit careless and wandered onto the roads in all the excitement! They even helped participants cross the road, and even responded to requests to help shoot photos!

Check out the hot chicks in uniform (and with guns)!

Kevin managed to chat with a few Aussies who joined in the rally - they were from the Socialist Alliance of Western Australia, the sister organization of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM). They mentioned that they knew Dr. Jeyakumar personally, and he stayed at their homes when he visited Perth to give talks.
A local passerby even commented on his surprise at the number of people gathered there (more than 200), and that this was the biggest rally he'd ever seen in Perth! Apparently Perth residents are not as inclined as their counterparts in the East when it came to involvement in such rallies.
As the crowd dispersed, Kevin went over and thanked the police for their help.
Policeman: What for? (looking surprised, as if it was all just a part of his job)
Kevin: Well, at least you're not firing tear gas at us, which is probably what's happening back home right now.
Policeman: (Laughs) Yea, that's because we don't have any!

Let me tell you why the Queen wearing yellow when granting an audience to Najib was not a ...

    Posted: 17 Jul 2011 09:35 AM PDT

Fact 1. The Queen, contrary to popular belief, is very much well-informed. She is constantly kept abreast of the latest developments and news pertaining to her realm and her government by her team of palace advisers, secretaries and civil servants. They, in turn, gather their information from various sources, including ministries, government departments, Scotland Yard, 10 Downing Street, and members of the press corp in the UK. (Scotland Yard, knowing that the Queen would be granting an audience to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, would have certainly informed the Palace of the many demonstrations in London by Bersih 2.0 supporters.)

When a visiting dignitary is scheduled to meet the Queen, she is always fully briefed on the background of her visitor, the current situation of her visitor's home country, and the DO's and DON'T's to observe. Particularly, she would be informed of developments in her own realm regarding the visitor. Scenes in London like the one in the photo below would not have escaped Her Majesty's team of advisers, who in turn would have briefed the Queen. So, to assume that she was not aware of Bersih 2.0 is untenable.

Fact 2. Royal wardrobe and fashion is strictly regulated, and the Queen and members of the Royal Family are always careful not to make any fashion faux pas or distress their guests. Her advisers would have advised her to stay away from wearing yellow, and explained the significance of the colour in present circumstances. As Sarawak Report suggests, "she MUST have been informed of the sensitivity of the colour yellow".

My friend (and fashion writer) Sasha Bashir commented at my facebook, "I have read in several write ups about Princess Diana's wardrobe that English royals are always briefed on current issues and what colours should and should not be worn. One I can remember is that she visited some country where they had just lost an important football match and the whole country was upset about it. The baju she was going to wear at state formal dinner was same colour as flag of the other country, so she had to change her wardrobe plans. Kate Middleton is also following this kind of thing. On her trip to Canada recently, she wore white dress, red shoes and red maple leaf hat. Canada flag is red, white with maple leaf. The royals are not supposed to be fashion icons (even though people like Princess Di and Kate are), they are to be fashion diplomats. :)"

Fact 3. Besides attending public events, state dinners, receiving dignitaries and horse races, the Queen actually does paper work! Yes, Her Majesty, like many of us, has her daily duty of working at one of her many desks reading and signing state papers and official documents (often classified as secret). British fastidiousness with information and intelligence gathering is well-known. Her cache of papers would most definitely have included confidential dossiers on Najib Razak and Malaysia. And Bersih 2.0.

Fact 4. Besides official papers, she also reads the newspapers. Knowing that she would be meeting the Prime Minister of Malaysia, an article in The Guardian, a respected British newspaper, with the headline "Malaysia's Najib must abandon the Mubarak model", would surely have caught her eye.

Fact 5. The Queen meets her Prime Minister once a week, every week. It would have been incumbent upon David Cameron to apprise the Queen of Najib Razak and Malaysia, in view that he would be visiting the UK on an official trip. News of the Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur, being reported globally the same week the Queen had her weekly meeting with David Cameron, would most definitely have been a topic of conversation. It is also a practice for the British Prime Minister to advise the Monarch on how to appropriately respond to political situations of the day, since she is constitutionally apolitical.

Did Cameron therefore gently suggest that the Queen wear yellow as a message to our Prime Minister and also to the people of Malaysia? Where Cameron could not publicly chastise Najib, the Queen could, with regal aplomb, send a strong message?

Fact 6. The Queen is a politically astute woman who has seen twelve British prime ministers serve under her reign, the list starting with Winston Churchill, no less! Her vast experience in international relations and diplomacy is unchallenged and she would thoroughly understand the subtleties and symbolism attached to what one says and what one wears. To assume that Her Majesty has no political acumen is completely ludicrous.

Fact 7. Everything the Queen does is planned in advance and takes into consideration all factors. Everything has a reason, even right down to the colour of the flowers in her audience chamber! Nothing is coincidental, random or arbitrary where the Queen of the United Kingdom is concerned.
